Guild Wars 2 Beta This Weekend

The ArenaNet Blog announces the second Guild Wars 2 Beta Weekend Event begins this Friday. They say participants in the first beta weekend will be able to use their existing characters and experience some higher level content in the MMORPG sequel, and proceed to offer an outline of what this content will include.

I forgot where I've read this but apparently low level areas have less drastic dynamic events to ease players to the whole Events system but once you get to mid/high leveled zones, more dynamic "cause and effect" progress shows up such as enemy mobs being able to attack locations,

I hear yah, but what type of smarts does it take to run a dynamic event? What are we reducing our selves to? You see and react and you have a boat load of players around you at the beginning even if you are a putz with a mouse. Then the further you get in, the less people will be around thus not kicking in dynamic events perhaps, so if they are better later, will they run well?

I found playing the DE's were more apparent earlier on.

Also the part about "it gets better later", there are only so many times I can buy into that. Almost all MMO's have the "I'm bored person". Response "How far have you made it?". "Level Blah blah", "Oh it gets better at blah, you just needed to play a bit more". Rarely has a game started average and then wow'd me later.

None of this pointed at you, just attacking some stereotypes.

I think that has more to do with the fact that it becomes very zergy at the low levels due to the sheer amount of new players during a beta weekend and it will probably happen again once the game goes retail at first. I do know that some of the beginning area events have different outcomes and variations but that would require the players actually failing to beat an event and the sheer zerginess of the low level zones prevents that from happening very often. The horde of low level players makes it tough for the enemy AI to win at low levels so it gets reset and repeated often.

I've found that this isn't always the case once you hit the mid-level zones and when you have a higher chance to "lose" an event, different outcomes and variations show up more often. At least that was my experience with my group of friends during the first BWE/Stress Test.

Each area will have its own dynamic events. You don't have to stay in the same place and repeat events. If you get bored, just move on to the next area. There's an entire world of content, so I don't see what the problem is.

The devs did a AMA on reddit today, and someone compiled the answers.

A couple highlights:

Your characters from the last beta are still around.
Traits are now separated into tiers, along with skill changes (ie Guardian is now viable at range with scepter).
Fixed problem of people in the same group stuck in different server shards.
Increased client performance, although the majority of optimization will be done when features are more complete.
New dungeon in WvW
The release date is NOT end of June as they are definitely planning for beta weekend 3.

Looking forward to this weekend.

Well the ex girlfriend twisted my arm into buying it, since she bought it and wanted someone to play with. So hopefully it's fun. I did watch a 30 minute dev walk thru on game informer earlier, and at the very least, the combat looks fun and more dynamic than most mmo's. So it at least has that going for it.

At a scant level 8.. I recall a dynamic event where some NPC's had me go into a cave.. explore.. kill, whatever. I come out, and the cave guys are coming from behind me. The NPC kicked off an event that had us drive the guys back, and kill their leader. Cool.
The second time through there, the same event kicked off.. this time, we didn't go in with the NPC's.. they died.. the mobs built a small shack area outside of the cave, bolstered their defenses there, and the next pack of NPC's had a different event for us.

Also:
There's only so much you can do new in a game, but one thing:

You can be on any server, and group with people on ANY OTHER SERVER. So long as they're on your friends list.

Also, crafting doesn't suck that bad, and in general, a lot of it will be better than loot drops (by design). You don't lose progression when you switch crafts (2 active at a time), and you can harvest everything.

Dynamic events get more epic the further you level and the farther you go in. They also don't require any specific number of players, they happen when they happen.

It may affect people with alts more, but I rarely stuck around an area to see the same DE twice. I don't think I ever saw one 3 times. The plus of dynamic events in my mind is they aren't all: monsters spawn, kill them. They have all the diversity of static MMO quests: attacking monsters, defending from monsters, killing bosses, collecting, escorting, and just silly stuff. I was under the impression that Rift's invasions were a lot more homogenous (didn't play it though so correct me if I'm wrong).

If i weren't going to be out of town this week for an event (Tough Mudder) .. I would be balls deep in this game once again!
DAMNIT!
At least i have two coworkers that are going to play and give me the full report on changes.

I wanted to give the Mesmer and Engy a good look this weekend..i need more time to figure out which is going to be my main! (Elementalist, thus far).

I absolutely loved the last beta.. loved it.
-I might get to play for a few hours Sunday night

Someone explain to me what's so special about this game that is any different from every MMO out there? People on Blues tend to rip mmos to shreds, yet the vibe in general for GW2 not just here tends to lean on the positive side.

Promises of better PvE and better BG's. The group thing with overflow was big, I heard a rumor they have addressed the performance issues as well. Each to me was bad enough to have typical forum responses be merciless. But the game does get a pass from most, reputation I reckon. I hope it's good, I'm going to let the game earn though, instead of dropping my panties for it.

With so many of us on the beta, should we try to meet in game and see what its like to travel and play with others in a party/group beyond the whole basic coop? (somehow, haven't tried to do this with the beta yet)
Would be fun to see what the differences are

I'll post my chars in OOTB on Friday. I'm on Tarnished Coast, so yeah I'm down with some grouping if anyone is into it. I have a 20 ranger and a 10'ish Mesmer atm. Whilst ranger pets still need a lot of love Mesmer's are hella fun to play so far.

I don't remember where I was at, and I have a Elementalist that I can't remember its level either (I worked a lot that weekend, only got some time in) but it sounds like fun all in all

I do remember that during my last BWE/stress test, certain mid-level places which I had waypoint access to were contested by enemy AI and if they won, it no longer let me quick travel to there or have access to any of the downed venders until we fought and won back the place. The Heart events would then change for the players to do various tasks to help the NPCs rebuild.

Everyone down with the sickness? I know I am!

If you don't have a server yet, come to Tarnished Coast the unofficial RP server. Very good crowd there so far.

My GOD! Cutter is being positive? Guild Wars 2 is truly a miracle, I await the next BWE with much anticipation

I'm actually on a EU server lol. Surprisingly my ping stays in the ~150 range and the community is really good. However I suspect since they doubled the server count they'll be offering free server transfers again and I'll take advantage of it. I have several friends who managed to grab keys during the give aways over the last week, looking forward to showing them the ropes.

So if that's really working great this time, I'll only bitch about how the game is the same as every other massive ; )

Which of course is a gross oversimplification (when isn't it?)... Really though, I just mean I found it to be much less 'new' than expected... I already bought it (twice), and will have some fun with it... I just wanted more...

-Alamar

Well, I agree for the most part... but when it comes to down right basics, like:
~ Virtual World
~ Mobs to kill
~ Quests to get
~ Leveling / Character Progression
~ Loot to wear or sell
~ Reaching new area
~ Rinse and repeat
...there isn't much wiggle room for innovation, from that very basic perspective.

What I find refreshing for the PVE is the whole "coop approach" instead of "competitive approach". No need to group to participate, no kill stealing, no ninja looting, everyone can Rez... it makes for a much more friendly and pleasant environment than other MMO's, IMO.

I just wish the dynamic events were a bit more "dynamic", rather than the same 2 or 3 happening in the same area, all the time.
