The counter strike guy doesn't work there any more, but I believe Robin Walker does and his team created Quake TF. Counterstrike was guyS. Jess Cliffe is still there. Gooseman left to make a new CS clone with some Korean studio. My assumption is that he wasn't really Valve material. Gabe has said in interviews that many of Valve's older employees wouldn't even come close to being hired if they had applied today with the same skillset (not that he specifically meant Gooseman but you get the idea). I figure Gooseman felt he wasn't getting the proper attention/respect as the creator of the #1 competitive PC FPS so he decided to leave for some Koreans that would let him do as he wanted. As we know for a fact now Valve works on what they find interesting, I suspect Gooseman left right around when CS:GO was becoming a sure thing, probably nobody entertaining his ideas for a total reboot. |

TF2 and CS have been worked on by Valve longer than they were mods, and the people who created those were all given really nice jobs. The horror... They're acquired properties. Rockstar doesn't claim they created the GTA franchise, they accurately attributed creation to the people that made it(Rockstar North, formerly DMA) in their GTA5 press release. What you're saying is like Valve claiming they created Action Quake 2 because Gooseman worked for Valve Actually, it was created by DMA Design, who was purchased afterwards and renamed Rockstar North.
Team Fortress was created by Team Fortress, who was purchased by Valve and renamed Valve. Counterstrike was made by Mihn Lee and Jess Cliffe, whose company was purchased by Valve and renamed Valve.
So yes, Rockstar is doing the exact same thing by claiming Rockstar North created GTA. What's important is to pay attention to whether it was an asset sail or a merger/acquisition. All three of these cases were the latter. It wasn't the names moving, but the entire entity, including the people behind it. |

Valid point, but like with most competitive games, repetition is made part of the game to establish a level playing field. Like fighting or sports games. There is no "spikes & lava" field for soccer, although it would make the game more interesting to me.
I miss Mutant League sports games.

Naw, valve doesn't need to try and squeeze everyone out of their last dime for money, they have plenty of it. For example, TF2, you can get away without ever buying anything, and many of the important weapons you can get from achievements to unlock milestones. You can get drops and trade for others if needed.
Valve has said they saw 12000% increase in revenue from TF2 when it went free to play compared to all previous sales of it, so they know what they need to do. |

LoL also doesn't charge real money for items(according to the article summary, thats it sounds like they're doing), has tighter character templates, has less item variability(there are many more items in DOTA2 as far as I can tell, but this isn't necessarily a good thing or a bad thing), and is graphically more accessible(though the recent update visually darkens the mood a bit like DOTA2) |

| It's nice to know that it will be purely cosmetic. Hopefully they continue that once they start releasing newly designed heroes (i.e. ones that were not in Dota All-stars). |

| Thank god for that! I've played Rise of Immortals a few times and enjoyed it, but the thing that really turns me off is having to learn a new hero every time because the one(s) I played before is no longer free... |

Was there ever any doubt?
At least its not pay 2 win:
Dota 2 will not be a pay-to-win game. All the items in the store are cosmetic, and don’t affect gameplay. All of the heroes will be available free of charge. |
