Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition & Steamworks

IGN has word that the additional content in the recently announced Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will be released for consoles as paid DLC (thanks VG247). This includes word that the game will be available on Steam, and according to Eurogamer the version sold on Steam will use the Steamworks for DRM rather than the reviled Games for Windows LIVE service, though the version sold in stores will still use GFWL.

That's the problem. I'm pretty sure they said that they won't even let you change the screen resolution, so you'll stuck at 720p. 30 FPS cap as well.

highly, highly doubtful

One would hope. However, all the screenshots released so far have been 1280x720. Why would anyone release 1280x720 screenshots for a PC game, when the majority of PC gamers use 1920x1080? I think there's a very good chance that the resolution will be locked at 720p.

Unlike Steam, you can play any GFWL game in single player without ever going online or creating an online account.

I wouldn't say "any". I'm pretty sure in order to save my game in Dr2LOTR I had to go online (despite it being saved locally).

Seemed a little different than the usual fare, but I forgot how much I hate playing any game that requires aim on a console. It was so annoying I just quit after dying to the Chimera thing in the first level. I'll wait for a PC version and try it then.

Chimera is best beaten by first hacking the snake off (jump toward the chimera and R2 to grab on), then hacking the goat to pieces, and finally finishing whatever health the lion has left. The lion itself is heavily resistant to physical damage so if you're just trying to hack away haphazardly at the thing you won't see results. If you are playing a melee character, most of the "boss" battles involve climbing onto the enemy and hacking at its weak spot(s). Archers have the benefit of being able to do the same thing without jumping on, and mages... well, mages are pretty shit for boss fights. I'm about 20 hours into a new game with mage and my pawns are too fucking stupid to do what they should during boss battles, so it's left to me to stand out of the way spamming comestion (which isn't nearly as effective on bosses as stabbing them is).

I did just get access to the high-tier sorceror spells, but oh my fuckin god they all have 15 second cast times. With my melee character I would just walk up to something and poof smash it to shit with a special move.

Has anyone else noticed this makes no damn sense? GFWL completely useless as DRM, that's not what it's designed for. Unlike Steam, you can play any GFWL game in single player without ever going online or creating an online account. Not even a single time with the first install.

It would make sense to require GFWL only if they were using it for matchmaking or persistent achievements. But that must not be the case if the Steam version is GFWL free. Or did they actually go to the work of creating two alternate forms of matchmaking/achievements?

Well, I just tried the Dragon's Dogma demo. I'm not sure about the game itself yet. Now, GFWL sucks the balls off a camel, no doubt, but that wasn't much of an intrusion. While it would be to everyone's benefit if it was killed immediately and forgotten, it isn't enough of an intrusion to warrant boycotting great games like Batman AC. If Dark Souls is good (I knew nothing about it at all until today), GFWL isn't a reason for me to avoid it.
This.

I fully understand not being a fan of the system, but boycotting a game because it uses GFWL (which is most likely not a developer decision anyway) is really only depriving yourself of a game.

I decided to boycott Mass Effect 3 because I thought the series had already taken a downward turn with ME2, and everything I heard about ME3 (even ignoring the infamous ending) confirmed my opinion. But it's a game I have no interest in playing... I'm not fooling myself that my refusal to buy it will have any effect on the series whatsoever. I'm not going to let stupid DRM stop me from playing a game I want to play.

That being said, GFWL is stupid. Steam has everything that GFWL adds (achievements and matchmaking), without being as obtrusive or annoying. And savegame backup/restore is much easier with anything other than GFWL games (although it would be nice if developers would put their savegames in a unified location instead of various places under the Documents folder). So there's really no reason for GFWL to continue to exist, since Steam does everything it does better.

I hadn't logged into GFWL in a year and a half, when I last played Dead Rising. When I started up Batman Arkham City last week, I had forgotten it was a GFWL game. All that happened was the little message box appeared telling me that I was logged into GFWL in offline mode and then the game started. Now, GFWL sucks the balls off a camel, no doubt, but that wasn't much of an intrusion. While it would be to everyone's benefit if it was killed immediately and forgotten, it isn't enough of an intrusion to warrant boycotting great games like Batman AC. From what I've read, Namco isn't going to make any effort to adapt the controls to M/KB. In fact, they aren't going to make any effort for any PC-centric features. They've stated that the game is going to be exactly the same as the console versions.

They don't really have to do much to adapt it to the PC platform. I meant as long as they don't do something stupid like not having user customizable bindings and actual graphical options. They don't need to redo the user interface or something IMO.

That's the problem. I'm pretty sure they said that they won't even let you change the screen resolution, so you'll stuck at 720p. 30 FPS cap as well. Hopefully it was just a translation/miscommunication issue but given Namco's general absence from the PC market, who knows.

Didn't the developers admit this was a straight up console port or am I thinking of something else?

From what I'm understanding from this article its going to be a direct port.

Graphically, the PC edition is unfortunately not going to go high-definition

And its noted on other sites that no one is sure about if it will be sold through Steam but still need GFWL. I'm thinking it will be exactly that though since they have already spent the time and money on using GFWL for its online functions and they aren't likely to bother re-doing it for Steam and on top of that having the online communities fragmented like that. Too much time, money and possible back fire.

Oh well, like many gamers I won't bother if its a GFWL. Like many things, it sounds great on paper, but not in practice.
