38 Studios Closed?

38 Studios laid off its entire workforce according to an unconfirmed report on WPRI.com where they have an email purportedly sent to the company's staff, which they say consisted of 379 employees a of March 15. The Verge adds they've been informed by "a source familiar with the company" that 38 Studios also closed both its Rhode Island headquarters and its subsidiary studio Big Huge Games (thanks nin). They also note there is a semi-confirmation of this in a tweet from Colin Campbell, lead world designer at Big Huge Games: "Big Huge Games was home for my wife and me for our adult lives so far. I'll miss it terribly, but so proud. Good night and good luck." The Verge also quotes Governor of Rhode Island Lincoln Chafee attributing the closure to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, saying the RPG "failed." They note that the game sold approximately 1.2 million copies in 90 days and Chafee says experts told him it needed to sell three million copies to break even. In 2010 Rhode Island loaned 38 Studios $75 million.

Financial troubles at the developer founded by former major league baseball pitcher Curt Schilling surfaced less than two weeks ago, but after some drama involving a bounced loan payment check and allegations of a missed payroll, things seemed to be on the rise, with word that the loan payment cleared and that the company's MMORPG codenamed Project Copernicus was expected in a year. In an interesting side note, Rock, Paper, Shotgun points out the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation has posted 38 Studios Public Documents with all the details on its financial dealing with the company.

Personally, I don't think that America will last, or most other major nations for that matter. If that's really the case then it's for the best if we split up. Go back to the city-state model or a loose confedation of states/provinces.

Cutter, I suppose it's not Obama's fault that he's failed to pass a budget since coming into office either right? Is that Bush's fault too? I am so sick and tired of year in and year out of this guys first term, left leaning people's answer to every mistake Obama makes is still "Bush's fault"

When does it become Obama's fault that he's failed as hard as Bush? And trust me, I didn't like Junior either one bit.

You folks ignore that the dems had control of both the house and senate at the end of Bush's term, you guys ignore the Dems were in total power when Obama took office and still couldn't pass a budget.

The GOP isn't any better, this I agree with you all on 1000 fold. The only difference being the GOP tends to not resort to class warfare, or deflect attention with fake occupy movements left and right either. Or indoctrinate college kids, and really middle school kids.

I work in the IT field in the public sector and spend a majority of my time in the town I work in school system, some of the shit these liberal teachers are teaching this kids is absolutely mind blowing. Not to mention they're so focused on garbage like anti bullying and codling little Johnny that little Johnny barely knows how to read or write. It's sickening.

At the end of the day both parties are driving us off the cliff, Liberals just have the peddle to the damn floor board.

Keep spreading the lies

Government spending under Obama, including his signature stimulus bill, is rising at a 1.4 percent annualized pace slower than at any time in nearly 60 years.

"[...] in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying." - Adolf Hitler

How terrible. KoAR was actually a great game, and to see the studio behind it close down so damn soon is awful. I don't understand how someone could expect a completely brand new IP such as KoAR could sell 3 million copies just to break even.

Yeah I really can't wait til all his obamites vote him in again so he can finish what he started in turning the US into a 3rd world liberal utopian welfare state. It'll be so awesome!

Obama was voted in by people who are either ignorant or self-destructive. Neither is surprising given how American college graduates can't even spell, and come out brainwashed with socialist agenda and expert knowledge of how to wrap a condom around a cucumber.

No wait, that last one is middle school...

Most former Soviets like myself voted against him in 2008, but the few that didn't, oh, the irony is just too much to bear. I knew he was bad, but his actions and words are so blatantly Soviet in nature, he behaves so much like a hostile, power-hungry dictator, it really surpassed my wildest expectations. It's such a Soviet thing to do - talk about equalizing wealth, make things hard for businesses to generate wealth, pit the "small people" against each other, and then go and fly on your private chopper to the party on your dacha.

P.S. Kingdoms of Amalur sucked.

Well he did spend most of his college days hanging with Marxist professors, says so himself in his book. Kinda makes sense.

Wait he racked up $5T in debt all on his own? You mean he's still in office and blowing TARP money every year(tip it's still in the budget), because there hasn't been a budget and it's still operating on fiat.

Damn...the legacy of that guy, being president while not president is amazing!

WW2? Bush's fault, world hunger? Bush's fault. 5 trillion debt while not being president for 3 and half years? Also Bush's fault. He's amazing!

Wait. How does one person rack up $5T in debt and have the lowest spending in 60 years?

Edit: Oh wait, I get it. It's because you can turn around and "massage" the numbers, and then apply the difference by inflation. Oh how silly me.

Are there any sane Republicans left? You guys all sound like conspiracy theorists at this point. Oh and by the way, Obama's spending is the lowest rate in 60 years. Our debt is leftovers from the Bush administration.

Obama spending lowest in 60 years

Actually I'm not even a republican, go figure. When liberal leaning papers like USA Today post these kinds of stories

Also, I loved the look of Providence Place, but haven't been since 2002. Also sucks.

And blah blah, spending blah blah.

Sorry for the loss of jobs, but if they had made a better game, it might have sold more. I had high hopes for this game based on the press, but when I got the demo, I was completely let down. Looked like a single-player WoW knock-off and played like the crappy console to PC port that it was. Reminded me too much of Daggerfall Daggerdale to even consider buying it.

edit for game name correction. Daggerdale was so bad I tried to block it's name from my memory.

This state is notorious for its politicians which Alan Dershowitz has called "The most corrupt in the country". The State has a checkered past with rumored Mob involvement in municipal projects (a running joke here is you'll never see a public construction project being done by a company that doesnt have a vowel in the owners last name). Appointments to positions and elected officials look at their positions as an opportunity to enrich themselves and friends. For example, "The Providence Place Mall" was pitched as a high end mall with expensive boutique outlets, gourmet dining (Think Copely Place in Boston) etc. Studies showed it would be untenable financially since the number of high income residents who could afford to shop there were'nt enough to support the place. The study results landed on deaf ears, bonds were floated, deals made without public input. It is now allowing in "Dollar Tree" and Trading card shops....ie; anyone who is willing to pay the rent.

Hump, do you remember when that mall was first built, the running joke was that "Providence Place is wired to be a casino"? But yeah, after 6pm I won't set foot in that place.

38 Studios was a similar deal. A few politicos begged the company to locate here with tax breaks and funding. It was put through with out a single bit of input from taxpayers. Not a single politician is claiming responsibility for the wrongheaded deal to begin with.

This was seen by many of us before the papers were even signed for the Studios to move in. As usual we get to foot the bill for some scumbags who feel the state is their personal Kingdom

I hope there is an investigation against EDC. There is no way 38 Studios burned through that much cash in that short a time.

As for the 379 former employees, they best move out of state. With 10.2% unemployment, and not much of a software industry to speak of, the prospects here are not that good.
