Diablo III Hotfixes

The Diablo III Website has a list of hotfixes implemented over the past couple of days in Blizzard's MMORPG sequel. There is just one fix listed from yesterday, but there is a longer list of changes from the day before, but these carry a warning saying: "If you have not yet completed Diablo III on Normal, some hotfixes described in this list may include spoilers."

I'm genuinely surprised to hear anyone defend it. Diablo 2 had a story but it didn't beat you over the head with exposition and forced events. If you wanted to find out more about Marius and the other characters it was all there. You were just a regular guy, not a Hero Saving The World like D3.

I thought the plot was threadbare and vapid which is fine because hey, its a Diablo game. I am there to click things to death and loot shit. But at the same time please don't force the silly events on everyone then. You only lost control of your character at the end of an Act in D2, not every 30 minutes.

People actually enjoyed the story? I felt like that was the one area where they completely dropped the ball, it was borderline self-parody at times (Act 2 was absolutely hilarious). They should have gone the D2 approach with cool cinematics once in awhile and letting your imagination fill in the rest. The in-engine event spam is simply annoying btw.

I did. It wasn't amazing, but it was decent. It was also better than your 'no story so we use our imagination and have happy fun pretend time' idea

Also, as someone that replayed D2 prior to D3's release, D2s story telling was not really any better. There was just less of it. That said, by video game standards the D3 story was pretty decent. It got me to play more to see how it ended.

spoilers below:
Randomly killing off Zoltun Kulle was a waste of a character. If they wanted to do it they could have done it better. I also thought Deckard was killed off a bit to 'well now he is dead'ish. Otherwise I thought it was fairly well done.

Hahah hero, you just fucked up my plans but it doesn't matter, I am doing X instead at Y location and you will never stop me, mwauhahaha!

*event initiated to watch your character turn a lever*

*boss appears in a vision to taunt you then summons shitty white mobs in an attempt to make you laugh yourself to death*

*event started for pre-boss amble*

That is Diablo 3, the story.

Oh and wizard set item comedy.

Yeah the part where Cain dies is a little to 'Disney-Evil' for me.

Just finished Normal (I know I'm slow) in about 38 hours of play time... that's uncovering every stone through the first two acts then rushing a bit through 3 and 4. Story's not bad IMO, act 4 did seem shorter than the rest... but it was long enough that I was satisfied. I think the toughest part about the story was that they whole game is so 'epic' that the ending would have to of been anything short of a revelation to have compared to the basic story. I like how they tried to spin the nephilim though... they were Godless evil bastard off-spring of angels and humans in the Bible but Diablo 3 tries to make them sound like the good guys... lol... and people thought 'spin' was only for Bill O'Riley to tackel!

just a just question.

That's a legitimate question. And I can say from experience that when I tried the "beta" (later renamed the starter edition), I wasn't overly impressed. Once you get into the teens and 20s and more spells (and runes) unlocking, it gets better.

Having said that, after finishing my first run through last night, I think I liked D2 better.

I'm pretty sure a bunch of the D3 team worked on D2 but anyway. His biggest complaint seems to be with the story and that's not something they can fix up with patches. I mean hey, it's never been a strong point in the Diablo franchise but its new levels of unintentional camp/bad in this one. Oh and *turns lever and gets pointless 5 second event* Less is more with the story in Diablo games.

Besides, D2 and WoW grew over several years so big content patches aren't necessarily going to come fast and furious. People waited a decade for the game, no surprise some aren't happy when they feel their expectations weren't met.

Also Ouch!.

heh. Also, remember last week they came out and said ladders aren't important, loot is important. Well, if you want the loot to last as long as the ladders have for D2. Something tells me it is going to take a while before they drop the phat loots!

When ladders were important, it didn't make any sense to hold back loot....

Yeah sure coop is fun, but working people aren't often online at the same time.

Then the disconnects, lags etc.

60 Euros wasted.

It's not like D2 was Shakespeare or anything.

Boy you would sure think it was by the comments made by people NOT playing D3! Acti/Blizz knows what they are doing, but it is a pretty large and complex game. They still tweak, nerf, buff classes and stuff in WoW - they will do the same for years to come in D3. One thing people over look that "remember" how awesome D2 is/was is that although it is the next iteration, there isn't anyone in the project that made D2 so "awesome".

Common sense still needs to be applied - it just isn't being done.

And, didn't they rip out a bunch of content not to long ago? I am sure that single move made a lot of weird things happen in the game that they haven't accounted for yet. Changes are sure to come.

Yes, that was my point. Good for me. I'm not bitching about it. I'm just observing what others have said about it and I'm glad that I didn't pay to deal with those issues, as they are quite significant issues to me. I don't see a problem with that, but if you want to be defensive about it, well, good for you?

Really? You have something like 40 posts in a week talking about a game you don't have!
Yes, I'm pretty disappointed with what came out after such a long development time. I wanted to see D3 be an amazing game. Instead we get a game that falls flat on several counts. I'd be pretty pissed if I had bought it, but since I didn't I can just comment on the game and be glad that I didn't shell out the cash. If I want to play an online only game like this that has a lot of issues, I can play PoE for free.

It's really weird because every time I read about you guys not getting any drops to help your characters, all I see is drops that can upgrade or sidegrade my current gear as I progress. Now I havn't dumped as much time(damn work) but I've gotten through Normal on 2 characters without going to the AH once. The problem is not the loot, but the player wanting to min/max stuff. ALL stats help you, just some more then others. I saw people complaining about having 1 wasted stat on a 6 stat gold so they didn't see it as an upgrade. Oh wait that wasted stat was more health on health orb pick up.(Not really a waste) I know my stash is filled with gear because it's hard to choose which to wear or I swap it out depending on what I need at the time.

Also I've never had a disconnect issue, and very min lag for an online game(Maybe 1-2 sec of rubber then clears up).

Same experience here. I DID go to the AH and got ridiculously powerful fist weapons for my Monk. Probably going to take them off - way too powerful and would rather keep game vanilla. Can save them for another toon. 6 toons created and having a blast.

Well the problem is that the game really places an emphasis on health and damage which come from two stats. Sure other stats change a number on your character sheet but they do not give you anywhere near a bonus as your main stat and vitality do. This isn't restricted to attributes either, item rolls are important. +Damage is a huge game changer and not in a min/maxing way. Doubling your DPS isn't really what I consider min/maxing. Many items I come across might have more armor for example but that doesn't mean I just equip them without at least considering the modifiers and I don't really think of that as min/maxing either.

As you get into Inferno you start adding resists but it's a much more simplified system than previous games. I get what you're saying and there are some people who will min/max every possible item roll/slot for their character but I think the loot table is a bit more flawed than you're considering. To be fair though some people will just get better luck with drops than others. A friend of mine is really upset because he has had to purchase most of his upgrades on the AH while I've always had really good luck with drops for my own class. I think that whole thing is exasperating for players who do more solo especially.

On a more personal complaint, I'm really disappointed with the quality of the loot modifiers themselves at high levels. What you're collecting at low levels differs very little from higher levels and they don't throw much into the mix to make it interesting. 1.5% chance to stun, whoop de doo. Some of the D2 items had class abilities and the like on them. Sure that introduces some balance issues but its primarily a co-op game so I don't get the big deal. I'd rather the loot be really fun than incredibly balanced.

Fair enough, but 'min/max' players make up the majority of Action RPG gamers from my experience. People for whom it's about the journey (like myself) tend to be in a distinct minority. From the way I've seen the loot system in D3 described at length by many posters in several different threads it seems like the majority of players would be compelled to use the auction house. Call me a cynic, but given that Blizzard is taking a cut of every transaction, that smells like a design decision, not happenstance.

There's no RMAH right now, so there's nothing for Blizzard to be taking a cut of. I guess when they finally do come out with it, we can see then, but for the moment, it sounds like there is plenty available on the "uses gold" AH. It'll be interesting to see what happens to that one when the RM one finally makes it up.
