Into the Black

Happy belated birthday to Unreal, as the Epic Games Website has word on the game's 14th anniversary, which was actually yesterday. Thanks Gamer's Hell.

For some reason this new ShootMania trailer reminds me a lot of Unreal...

I heard Epic didn't really make Unreal, but it was a Canadian company called DigitalExtremes?

Digital Extremes developed the add-on pack for Unreal, as well as the multiplayer add-on for Unreal 2.

They also did the first (and in my opinion, the best) Unreal Tournament.

Mr. Tact Apr 17, 2013, 12:33: Pretty sure that's the definition of trolling...

They were involved with the creation of all the Unreal games except Unreal 2 and UT3, I believe. I'm not sure to what extent. Given that Unreal 2 and UT3 are considered the worst two games in the series, I'm guessing that DE was mostly responsible for the other games.

Digital Extremes originally WAS part of Epic Games, but when Sweeney, Mark Rein and CliffyB decided that Canadian winters blew they moved to NC. The guy from Digital Extremes didn't want to leave his hometown so he formed Digital Extremes. It was just him at the time, and he and Cliff co-designed the game with Epic doing all the technology behind it.

Unreal 2 was done by Legend Entertainment with very little input from anyone at Epic or Digital Extremes.

UT3 was done again by Epic, this time led by Steve Polge, he of ReaperBot fame. I don't know anyone that considers it the worst of the series, though. UT2K3 is infinitely worse, and UT2K4 was just UT2K3 with bandaids put on the extremely bad parts. UT3 needed some patches, but after those patches it's pretty widely considered to be the best UT after the original.

I musta missed that Max Payne 3's NA release got pushed to the European date... Gotta wait a whole 3 days more now

edit: Whoa wtf... If I search youtube for "Max Payne 3 gameplay" I get this ridiculous error

All other searches and videos work fine and don't do that.

edit: Still doing it 1.5 hours later.

Yeah, that was when Epic was into good games and PCs. Sad how far they've fallen.

Congrats, Epic! Thanks for providing an FPS alternative to the dank, indoor-centric id engine for all these years.
