A post in d3 forums says its about grabbing session ids in public games and spoofing them, which wouldn't surprise me. That would explain the reports of people with authenticators getting hit.

I'm curious, what do you give valves steam services and storefront in general? I see problems with them every single time they do a big sale or release, and its not the content servers (according to the stats) so it must be the front end and load balancing. And of course I often see various storefront errors in just everyday browsing of steam.
