38 Studios Makes Payment; Copernicus in June 2013?

Following word that 38 Studios' loan payment check bounced, Joystiq has word the studio has successfully made its required $1.125 million payment to Rhode Island. "It's time for them to go out and get private capital funding," Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee said. "That's the deal. It's a generous deal, but stick to it." Word is their next payment is $2.6 million due on November 1st. Joystiq also reports that Chafee offered the 38 Studios-related press conference offered what he believes is the release date for Project Copernicus, 38 Studios' upcoming MMORPG. "What I understand is Copernicus is June of '13," he said. Formal or not, as far as we know this is the first game release date of any sort announced by an elected official.

kingdoms of amalur wasn't that bad. what happened to these guys? not enough sales to offset an enormous budget? not enough experienced developers behind the wheel at the studio?

I think the game sold around 500k units in the U.S. If you include digital and international sales, the game probably sold around 1 million units, which isn't bad but not enough to cover the loans that 38 Studios took from Rhode Island.

So, next loan payment due in November 2012, next game due no sooner than June 2013, equals missed loan payment.

Sounds to me like 38 Studios needs to diversify themselves a bit to find another revenue stream. I know, maybe they can open a "compassion center' (local term for medical marijuana dispensary); or maybe get involved with Twin River. Oh wait, I forgot, the state lost its shirt at Twin River too.

Vanguard would have been a lot better had the studio not been headed up by a drug addict with delusions of grandeur who wasted a lot of time.

But that describes so many people with power in the game industry...

Two spring to mind right off the bat - Brian Fargo and, dare I say it, Derek Smart... *turns the lights off, closes the window blinds and curtains, crawls into bathtub with flashlight, blanky, teddy bear and shotgun, along with laptop and pirated version of Desktop Commander*

We don't know enough to make any educated guesses as to what this game would be like if it were released, in terms of gameplay, but I have zero faith in their ability to manage their business long enough to see it to launch.

At this point I'm not interested in anything with gameplay and mechanics that are slightly reskinned versions of WoW. I enjoyed that style of MMO for a while, but it's just tired now.

MMOs need to specialize and get away from the absolutely idiotic attempt to please everyone. Pick a smaller crowd to cater to, keep your budget sane, and ship a fucking product.

This game will be utter shit on the level of Vanguard

With the exception of Vanguard being incomplete it was actually pretty good. Another year in the oven and they would have had something special.

I agree. Vanguard would have been a lot better had the studio not been headed up by a drug addict with delusions of grandeur who wasted a lot of time.

If you don't like where gaming is heading, stop giving your money to the people who are taking it in that direction.

Yeah, but they're (the RI taxpayers) are still F'd in the A unless 38 can secure funding to not only pay off the 112 million (and interest is still accumulating) but finish this game as well. And who the hell is going to give them the 10's of millions they'll obviously need to finish it at this point? I'll be mighty surprised if anyone steps up to the plate for this. Personally, I wouldn't touch them with a 1,000,000 ft pole.

Tell ya what, I'll pay them if you can actually lift that million foot pole...
