Ships Ahoy - Diablo III

Battle.net announces the extended wait for Diablo III is now over, and the action/RPG sequel should now be available worldwide. For anyone getting error messages from the game, this article may help you work out what's wrong, and here's word on the release:
Twenty years have passed since the Prime Evils were defeated and banished from the world of Sanctuary. Now you must return to Tristram and investigate rumors of a fallen star, an omen that the End Times have begun.

Diablo III is now live and available at a store near you -- or you can click here to purchase a digital copy directly through Blizzard. The game is available at retailers in both a standard and Collector's Edition. I'm sure by 'middle of the night', you mean 2pm because it's STILL happening.

The servers are more-or-less down to fix the problems everyone is complaining about... they aren't overloaded. Fuck almighty.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

Now now Blizzard, don't sell yourselves short. It's only been like a dozen!

Any news on how this plays on less-than-stellar connections? And does it actually install on Win7-64? (Since the demo wouldn't?)

Creston

Creston I had the beta installed on a Win7-64 system, as for the net connection thing I couldn't tell ya.

I wasn't expecting it to be completely smooth for Diablo 3, but as it is it's really apparent that they just plain weren't prepared at all. It's like they're doing their stress testing on launch day.

These kinds of things are really hard to anticipate and provision for. If sales surpassed projections then that could be the answer right there. Friends of mine who don't even play PC games anymore were asking me about this. Actually one buddy of mine commented on picking it up for his Xbox on the way home, I didn't have the heart to break it to him.

Anyways back to the game for me!

If you have 2 million pre-orders, and you ship an additional 3 million copies to stores, shouldn't you have launch capacity for 5 million copies? That doesn't seem like it's extremely difficult math.

But Blizzard figures they can easily get away with less, as people will complain, then get in, and keep playing, and stop complaining. And like I said, if you keep accepting that kind of behavior from a developer, don't be surprised if that's what you get.

To be fair, Blizzard isn't always this bad with their launches. World of Warcraft was, but the expansions for the most part were fairly smooth. I haven't played WoW since shortly after Cataclysm launched, though, maybe things have degraded a bit.

I wasn't expecting it to be completely smooth for Diablo 3, but as it is it's really apparent that they just plain weren't prepared at all. It's like they're doing their stress testing on launch day.

As anyone who has worked in a datacenter or in other network operations capacity will tell you, setting up your infrastructure to handle a level of concurrency you will only see for a couple of hours is enormously costly for very little return on investment. There is a good reason no one does it unless their high-concurrency period isn't that high to begin with.

And let's be honest, most developers aren't even in a position where they have enough demand for their titles to even run into this problem.

It's like you said, companies get away with it because it only upsets a few neckbeards in the middle of the night.

How are you building out your Wizard? Just curious as I could never come up with something I liked.

I'm focusing on AOE damage. I'm running with another Wizard and we burn stuff down pretty fast. I use Electrocute as my main attack, along with the tornado twister things or the arcane orb at the moment. I use Diamond Skin and uh... the big knockback thing as my defensive "oh shit" buttons.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

How invasive is the required internet connection for SP?

I'm on a handcranked internet connection in the centre of the jungle. Is it just a once off login or something more..diabolical?

So is this the first single player game in history with network lag?

Or should I say, is this the first digital canvas of art with laggy pixels on the canvas?

If so, that is quite the achievement.

I would hate to be playing hardcore like the guy I saw last night, only to have your character and monsters doing lag/teleports.
It's ridiculous really, regardless of how good your hardware is, network lag gets introduced into your single player game.
It's amazing to me what people bend over and take these days.

The beta showed me the game has lost the 'pull me back in' spark.
It sparks my curiosity to see some of what they were working on all these years, but it lacks gaming magic to pull me back to play it.

The amazing artistic canvas technology which they incorporated, that fans so hyped up, somehow didn't convince me to buy it either.
Maybe an art gallery will be interested in the laggy only online painting.

I'm seeing thousands of thousands of angry people complaining that the servers are down, can't login, etc etc etc.

Yep, if you keep buying products from companies that refuse to put up enough server capacity to handle all their pre-orders, then don't be surprised if they keep refusing to put up enough server capacity.

Apparently the servers are now down for the next few hours? Smooth launch...

But...but...someone on Blue's News said there were no problems at all today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
