The only advantage that plasma has is that it's cheaper but that's just not enough anymore. Plasma used to offer better blacks and viewing angles but LED caught up.
Plasma isn't cheaper (I wish, I'd own already if decent ones were), in fact the mid range sets can be quite expensive compared to LCDs. It's all what market segments are being compared, the low end of the LCD market is filled with off label trash for example. Comparing all of the LCDs and plasmas on the market must have been quite a project.
There is too much confirmation bias and LCD vs Plasma forum war stuff on the internet already, so I'm not going to get sucked into a debate about it, I probably should have used the word alternative instead of superior. There are many terrible plasma sets and plenty of shitty LCDs on the market. I would note however that plasmas cons are not related to picture quality unlike LCD. Ultimately that is what will doom the technology - ease of transport, consumer bias/ignorance due to poorly trained stores and aesthetics. Perhaps that's appropriate in the day and age we live in where everyone wants sleek electronics.
Hopefully OLED comes and kills them both off at some point, I'm tired of heavy plasmas and blurry LCDs.
