I really like Tropico 4. It's not about the challenge but more the building of the empire that I like. The music and the amusing commentary certainly help give it some charm. Definitely worth grabbing for those that haven't already.

It's not on the same scale as Sim City, so 'Dictator Tycoon' is probably a better comparison. You lay out your little island nation, building up an economy and keeping your population (which rarely exceeds more than 500 or so for most missions) satisfied enough not to overthrow you or vote you out of office, if you allow elections. You need policemen to keep regular crime in check, but then you also have military forces to ward of the threat of rebellion by extraordinarily unhappy citizens that exit normal society and plot against you. Above all, keep your soldiers happy so that they don't coup your ass.

It's a pretty fun game once you get a handle on all the variables. There's also a lot of options in how to rule, like you can take a religious slant and enact contraception bans and prohibition, or activate martial law and use gestapo-type agents to make dissident citizens "disappear." There's also a larger aspect of managing relations with the two superpowers, USA and Russia (game is set during the Cold War era); if they really, really don't like what you're doing, they might come and invade!

So I installed Tropico 3 to try tonight, got it for something stupid like a few bucks last sale....is it like SimCity or is it more like Populous? Not a HUGE fan of sim games, but they can be fun. Last one I enjoyed was circa 1999 Roller Coaster Tycoon....

I don't think this game likes the interface size being more than the default 100%. I have it set to 125 so it's easier to use on my TV and some very odd things are happening. Can't even start the game...hopefully setting it back to 100 will help.

D'oh, only 25% off the Modern Times expansion... I love Tropico 4, but I'm not sure I'll bite on that yet. Maybe a couple of the buck-fiddy DLC, though.
