We've started focus testing Windows 8 at the office here on regular users and none of can stand it for more than 10 minutes. One sales guy threw a fit even, it was kind of hilarious to watch him struggle with Metro. I have no idea what the fuck Microsoft is thinking, people are so incredibly dependent on the traditional Start Menu that I can see the potential for this to be a disaster on the scale of Windows ME.
I don't think Microsoft realizes that this sort of unified interface simply can't work as is. They aren't even remotely well poised to cannibalize their own base with tablets and phones either, this type of crap is just going to push alternatives as people will bring that same resentment over with them across platforms.
They can't keep damaging the Windows brand forever, I.T won't tolerate this indefinitely and eventually this is going to have consequences for Office too.
Normally it's just for reinstalling Windows but that can be done from USB pen-drive now and Windows 8 makes that even easier. The problem is that DVDs and Blu-rays are horrible to use - it's honestly a lot more practical for me to just download everything. What they need is a Steam-like client for media. I'm kinda surprised that Valve hasn't already moved into media distribution, as it would be awesome to have sales on TV series and movies. I remember an old interview with someone at Valve about this, I can't remember if it was Gabe or whoever. They basically said that the content holders are playing licensing hardball with everyone now due to Apple/iTunes being so successful but taking such high margins. They only want to support their own initiatives whenever possible it seems like and Valve just decided it wasn't worth the hassle.
The problem is that DVDs and Blu-rays are horrible to use - it's honestly a lot more practical for me to just download everything. Indeed. The CD-R was built/licensed without much input or foresight from media corporations, the first consumer ones appearing something like 10 years after the CDROM. They didn't make that same mistake with DVD/Blu-Ray though, they are layered in copy protection on every step of the supply chain. All of it ultimately meaningless in everything except pissing off legit customers but oh well.

| WMC is terrible. Not only that but I haven't used my optical drive in years. Think I'll stick with Win7 for a long, long time by the looks of it. Didn't they do this with Win95 or 98 or Me or whichever? I'm pretty sure one of those had some kind of add-on pack that allowed DVD playback, which makes some degree of sense - DVD playback costs them money but isn't used by too many people. It wasn't used by too many back in the day and it's falling back to not being used by too many again now.
As for that review, take it with a grain of salt as it's from a huge Linux nut, but I don't think this surprises anyone: Oh yes the Linux bias there is very strong, still some of the stuff he says makes sense to what I've been hearing from other people testing Win8, that it's a disaster for a desktop or laptop PC, it seems to have been made with a focus more on mobile and tablet experience rather than desktop.
I expect Win8 to be the new Vista and to follow the usual pattern of Microsoft Windows releases, good, bad, good, bad. Win7 was the Good one, Windows8 seems to be on target to be again one of the Bad Windows. |

I use Media Center (not Media player, there is a difference) for watching all my media (blu-ray, Avi's, Mkv's, live satellite tv etc)
Tried all the alternatives (MythTV, XBMC etc) and in terms of overall functionality? Nothing came close.
I think it's a mistake to remove it, as I doubt the codec licensing savings will be passed on to the end user.
Surprised at blue to hear him say he'd pay to *not* have it?!? |

| Not even just having to pay for WMC, but they won't natively have the ability to play DVDs or Blu-Ray any more in Windows 8. You'll have to get codecs from a 3rd party. |

I went to the dark side a long time ago myself after fiddling with every legit media platform you can imagine. It was a nightmare of compatibility problems and I think we spent a few thousand on both software, different addin cards and etc. Now we're strictly Usenet/OTA and never been happier with our media setup. They really need to make it easier for people. Yeah, I'm about ready to take the OTA plunge myself. |

As for that review, take it with a grain of salt as it's from a huge Linux nut, but I don't think this surprises anyone: Now onto the big end-user change for Windows 8: the Metro UI. Up to trying it out myself, I heard mixed views about Metro on Windows 8 but overall most comments seemed to be positive. After trying it out though, for Windows 8 on the desktop I see Metro as an absolute shit wreck. Metro may work very well for phones and tablets and game consoles, but for the desktop I see it as a disaster. Metro really isn't intuitive for the desktop, is complicated and very confusing after the common Windows desktop workflow since Windows 95, and overall makes Canonical's original Unity desktop environment seem better than Metro. I would take Ubuntu's Unity or the GNOME Shell any day over Windows 8 with Metro. |

| WMC works quite well for recording over-the-air broadcasts. Sounds like I'll be sticking with Windows 7 for quite some time. |

Who actually uses WMP? There are far better media players out there. Unfortunately WMC is one of the few options that works for PC/Ceton Cablecard tuner integration so yet again someone is making it more difficult for legitimate users to obtain content. Instead this will drive people to Usenet/BitTorrent and free media library solutions like XBMC. Microsoft needs people to have more reasons to use their platforms these days, not less.
