Official The Elder Scrolls Online Announcement

This press release officially announces The Elder Scrolls Online, the just-revealed MMOG. The announcement offers a bit more on the game:

Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax® Media company, today announced The Elder Scrolls® Online, an MMO in development at ZeniMax Online Studios. The Elder Scrolls Online will be the first Elder Scrolls game to allow gamers to explore the legendary Elder Scrolls world with others.

The Elder Scrolls Online is being developed for PC and Mac under the leadership of industry veteran Matt Firor, who has spent the last two decades working in online game development. Details about the game are revealed in an exclusive cover story in Game Informer®'s June issue, which ships to subscribers and newsstands this month.

"We have been working hard to create an online world in which players will be able to experience the epic Elder Scrolls universe with their friends, something fans have long said they wanted," said Matt Firor, game director of The Elder Scrolls Online. "It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years. The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made - and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise."

P. S if you think this game isnt going to make a ton of cash your nuts. Im not saying its gonna be a hit that last for 10 years( I hope it is ), but they will make a boat load of cash. I just hope the melee combat is better .. much better.

The combat's going to be the same as every other MMO. Click abilities from your hotbar and wait for cooldowns to end. Rinse and repeat. Read the Game Informer article and see for yourself. Also, the game is third-person only. And has classes instead of the freeform leveling system.

Welp...it's a typical MMO. It pretends to be doing something different but it's just variations on the same old shit that's in WoW. The article even says WoW style mechanics.

I really don't know how to interpret this; all I really want is just something like Skyrim with small-scale co-operative play built in. Making it into a complete MMO feels like it'd detract from the overall experience; less substance, more players.

Yeah, but they couldn't monetize co-op enough hence the MMO.

FWIW, Firor was an executive Producer on Dark Age of Camelot and its expansions.

From the information that leaked, it doesn't look like it will be a "cookie-cutter MMO," they are trying to put an Elder Scrolls spin on it. But it's still nowhere near what the fans' idea of a TES MMO would/should be, which is basically just Skyrim with more people.

Where's that guy from the last thread who called this the WoW Killer? I demand you show yourself and commit ritual suicide in front of us.

According to GI: Classes, no player housing, etc. Zero sandbox. It's just another WoW clone. I hate to say it, but I was right, they've thrown everything TES is about out the window in a petty cash-in attempt.

Cutter ya notice how there are no MMO's on the 360 beyond Phantasy Star? The reason for that is the Certification process, and the nightmare of a constantly patched game. One of the reason's Cryptic Studio's never released anything on the system but have support for 360 controllers.

Maybe its planned for the next-gen consoles next year. I just can't see them passing up all those potential sales. They made it clear long ago they really don't care about the PC market. And from the way the GI article reads it sure as shit sounds like its being designed for consoles first and foremost. I'll honestly be *VERY* surprised if it's not the case.

TOTAL FAIL. We already have countless cookie cutter MMOs... just total fail. Way to take a great world and dumb it down... I just don't understand the world these days...

I'm not sure you know what cookie cutter or dumbing down mean.

You have no idea what this game will be like. It's a safe bet it won't be cookie cutter, as making it a "WoW clone" or something like that would be completely unlike anything Elder Scrolls. As for dumbing it down...I don't know how putting it into the MMO genre would do that. If anything, it'll have to become more complex to compare favorably with other games in the genre.

I have plenty of disdain for MMOs, but I admit to being curious to see what this ends up looking like since it won't be developed on console hardware. Just looking, of course. I wouldn't play it since, you know, you have to deal with people.

Bethsoft doing anything anymore with the PC as the lead platfom will never happen. They're talking about the PC/OSX version here but I have a feeling the lead platform will be the 360. Oh yeah, you can count on some sort of consolization for this. May I take an arrow to the knee if it's not the case!

It would be a big risk. Every console-focused MMO since FFXI has fallen flat on its face.

Well it's the same engine as SW:TOR (Hero Engine), so I wouldn't expect too much... especially after the company that made the engine killed their own MMO Project, and is barely alive.

6. PC Only? May 3, 2012, 21:15 Quboid

I'm surprised MMOs are only on Windows or Macs. There's a fortune to be made with MMOs on consoles if you can get Microsoft and Sony to play along, and Elder Scrolls is ideally positioned to make this jump. MS and Sony would make a fortune too from a F2P game. Want a Daedric sword? That'll be 600 MS points.

If ESO was on the PS3 and Xbox as well as the PC, preferably playing together, World of Warcraft would have massive competition.

I think the money I might have spent on this will go to Kickstarter stuff instead.

I just don't see how the developer is going to make this fresh.

Honestly I just have no interest in this. But I should also state I'm not a big Elder Scrolls fan either. I personally find the whole IP rather generic & boring. A franchise like the Witcher has always peaked my interest more, I would not want Witcher MMO I'm just saying that IP & type of fantasy is way more interesting to me. Now a Fallout MMO....I'm all ears....
