On PC Black Ops II

PC Gamer grills Mark Lamia about Call of Duty: Black Ops II, asking the studio head at Treyarch about the just-revealed first-person shooter sequel, focusing on questions about the PC edition. This doesn't yield a lot of concrete answers, as he effectively dodges the question about dedicated servers, saying "we haven’t yet announced exactly what that setup is going to be." He does speak of how this uncertainty related to cheat prevention, and how their aggressive development cycle does not include time for beta testing, but also defers questions about LAN support, though he does speak of eSports support, which would obviously benefit from things like LAN support and dedicated servers.

Treyarch is usually pretty good to the PC community, lots of old hat PC gamers work there. This is likely just due to the unfortunate nature of their corporate parent.

Uuh... BF3 is pretty much one of the worst CoD clones ever made

The SP maybe, the MP is still pretty solid. I don't love the map selection but most of it is still a world above CoD. Be fair, don't be hatin playa

I wasn't trying to justify it. It was just an observation of their business model. However, as long as people keep buying it they have absolutely no incentive to change. BF3 was the only competitor but EA managed to fuck that up by boycotting Steam - still, they at least take their time and are a lot more progressive when it comes to pushing hardware, especially on PC.

I really wish Valve would increase the pace at which they put games out, especially FPS games. Even though they haven't pushed the graphical envelope since HL2 they still manage to achieve a lot with limited resources, as both TF2 and Portal 2 demonstrated.

That's because new "sheeple" are being introduced every day to the games... until humans can share experiences 1:1 remotely it is likely not going to stop either.

not our problem that they need to push out games every year because they'd like to continue some steady stream of revenue based on unrealistic expectations.

do we the gamers really NEED or WANT a new game every year? no. it's all about the business, not the customer. but customers eating it up anyways, buying reskined/rehashed games with new titles slapped on them, every year. sad.

I think the 2 year dev cycle is perfect. A game that is an evolution rather than an evolution should be doable in 2 years.

The problem is that we haven't had a revolution in what, 4 or 5 years now? I don't mean of CoD, I mean in general. We should have numerous evolution games coming out every year and a few revolution attempts that aim high with most failing but one or two catching on.

CoD got so damn popular that no one bothered risking those revolutions.

In terms of being a pure PC game, Black Ops was the closest that the entire series has been for years.

You are joking right? This has to be a joke.

Has everybody forgot already the terrible, awful support of BOs for PC, the broken promises, the modtools that took ages to come and then were pretty useless to do anything with them anyway? The dedi servers constant bugs that kept crashing servers left and right, the bugs in the game that prevented many players from even playing the game, let alone join a game in progress?

BO was a far bigger insult to the PC community than MW3 in my opinion, at least IW knows they don't care for PC games and act accordingly, Treyarch was all We love PC games and Dedicated server shirts and then they delivered jack shit.

Seems like conversations would be more productive all-around if people actually understood what they're talking about.

In terms of being a pure PC game, Black Ops was the closest that the entire series has been for years. Full dedicated server support, good amount of options and customizability, full Steamworks integration, and more.

Instead of having a cynical circle-jerk of insults and accusations, perhaps you should realized that Black Ops 2 has a better chance than every single Call of Duty game released in many years to actually be a great PC game.

And by the look of some of the really bad graphics in the trailer
Wasn't there some issues with BF3 where they shot all their trailers and gameplay vids on the PC version then when the game came out the console players were screaming bloody murder because the game didn't look like the trailers on their consoles.

I believe Activision always did their game trailers on the xbox. Not that it matters much what the trailers look like, CoD fans will buy the game regardless.

If you don't have the budget to do a game good, then don't do it. Don't do a half-ass job, rush it out, lie/announce it as a full-done golden job, and have us the gamers/testers report bugs for you and have overall bad experience.

Your first line/paragraph is the reason for what is outlined in your second & third line/paragraph. As long as the sheeple are happy with continuously forking out $60+ over, and over, and over, and over again for the SOS that has NO originality or creativity, then Activision will continue feeding the beast.

I predicted CoD would finally die off after BLOPs, but as you can see I was WAY OFF!

Just proof of the turn and burn. They don't care about cheaters or anything else - they only care about that 60.00 game 2x a year with 15.00 DLC. ie: 2x 120.00 game a year.

I like the games, I have skipped a couple here and there, but for the most part I enjoy them. But wow....just throwing their customer base under the bus. I will be skipping BLOPS2.

Obviously. They can't afford any delays because the games alternate year to year, which is why they never take any risks with the development and why they all come out so mind-numbingly generic.

I just despise the way that the COD and MOH games are simply US propaganda pieces. None of them offer any critical analysis of the conflicts or any emotional depth. And they stick to all the stereotypes for the enemies - Russias, Arabs, etc. I think it's sad that no military games try to look any deeper. I just wish some developers/publishers would look to push the envelope and not just stick to the "war is great", "USA rules" and "kill the ragheads" bullshit that we get spoon-fed at the moment.

They've announced that the game will have DX11 features but given how dire the graphics looked in the trailer I have ZERO confidence in this game. Low resolution textures, low poly models, the same over-the-top scenarios, the same terrible character animations / lip-sync, etc.

I'm forcing myself to play through the singleplayer campaigns for MW1 and MW2 after picking them up on sale a while back. I completed MW1 yesterday and it was alright, though less than 4hrs long. MW2 is just terrible though. Grenade spam is ridiculous, melee spam is equally bad, the levels are mind-numbingly linear and the endlessly respawning enemies are tedious (yes I know, you're meant to run through all the levels). I'm playing through on the easiest difficult setting and still finding the twitch gameplay to be tedious - there are so many times where you're expected to die the first attempt only to learn how to do it properly the second.

COD games really are beyond dire. I just don't get any enjoyment out of them. I certainly won't bother with any of the newer ones. I just find it depressing that COD is so successful when the games are so terrible.

Yeah, but it takes skill to get those things. In MW3 you need 5 linked kills to get a predator missile. If you can't link then 14 unlinked can get you a stealth bomber, if you choose.
