Diablo III Open Beta Weekend

Following indications yesterday that more accounts were being granted access to the Diablo III beta test, the Diablo III Website announces the beta will indeed be opened this weekend to anyone with a Battle.net account for stress testing. The open portion of the beta will begin at 3:00 pm EDT today and will run through Monday at 1:00 pm EDT. The accompanying FAQ explains how this will operate, and notes that while Korean players cannot participate, they will be holding a separate invitation-only event in Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. The invitation only closed beta will continue as planned until May 1st. To get a head start, you can download the client now from Battle.net.

What happened to all the retards that said this could be beaten in less than an hour first time through?

I only see people saying it took about 3 hrs.

It's a stress test. People complain that Beta's are just demo's now. Blizzard has repeatedly stated that their Beta is an actual Beta, not a demo. If you are one of these people, you're a hypocrite. They've been tweeting constantly the last 48 hrs about how they are continually working to improve the performance during the stress test.
I knew better than to even try playing this weekend.

So many trolls posting too. Horrible voice acting? Bad sound? We clearly aren't playing the same game.

Yeah, it wasn't that bad. Yes, it has issues and strange changes but it was still fun. Voice acting wasn't bad either. I like listening the books (audio -- reminds me of System Shock 2's audio playbacks) while continuing my game!

I played through solo with a barbarian when I was finally able to connect. Actually getting in has been practically impossible, but that's what a stresstest is all about I guess... Once I finally got in, the game was more or less rock solid, and the only interruption was a planned server restart. I hope they don't under-estimate the capacity requirements for launch, in particular for Europe. We're usually an afterthought, which makes sense in terms of market-size but it still sucks for me

What I've seen so far actually has me pretty psyched about 15/05. The game still feels very much like Diablo to me, and I've played both 1 and 2 to death. The skills were fun to use and had satisfying impact. The barbarian at least, would send lowly zombies flying in every direction. Obviously, with the small slice of the game we're getting, there isn't going to be much in the way of skill customization, but the small taste I got didn't leave me with a bad taste. It doesn't feel dumbed down to me, although I still think I would've preferred a more conventional approach with the option of respeccing for a fee. I didn't really get the same sense of progressing now that you no longer get to allocate skillpoints as you level up, but simply unlock some stuff instead.

Second, ideally the servers should be fine already. The game is less than a month from release, that's not a lot of time to fix any problems with the servers they find. The best case scenario for a stress test is that everything works fine. That means they planned ahead, and properly implemented everything they'd need to do in order for the game to be played properly. Personally, I'd hope they would be able to fix disconnect problems by release time, but there's certainly no guaruntee they'll be able to. So while it's not an end-of-the-world situation, it doesn't necessarily bode well for the finished product.

No. This is exactly what this weekend is about. Figuring out exactly what number of servers they need ready for next month to avoid these kind of issues. On top of that, this is still only providing them with an estimate of what sort of server load they'll really be facing when the full game launches.

Am I annoyed that I haven't been able to login even once this weekend? You'd better believe it. Would I rather have been able to login this weekend and then face a bunch of server side errors in May once I tried playing past the intro/beta area? Absolutely not.

148. Just finally tried it! Apr 22, 2012, 05:08 Ant

I finally played it as a Diablo fan, but I played solo as a female barbarian. It took me about 3.75 hours, with one bathroom break, to finish since I explored and destroyed everything! I went from about 10:15 PM PDT to 1:45 AM PDT! It was fun. I doubt I will have time to check out its multiplayer. I did a quick join, but got a bunch asian players due to their asian character names. Heh. I like the little touches here and there in the game. I don't like the new skils tree. I didn't get to do any identification. I like the audio narrations in the games, random talkings, etc.

The game ran very smooth (60+ frames per seconds (FPS)) on my old machine with updated Windows XP Pro. SP3 and ATI Radeon 4870 (512 MB of RAM) video card, but then old Diablo games ran fine on old computers. This was with maximum details at 1280x1024 resolution, antialias, full sound channels with an onboard audio, etc. I did not like its online connection requirement since I saw my cable modem lights blink too much! I even had a few lag hiccups! What the frak? Graphics reminded me of Torchlight game. Gameplay had World of Warcraft (WoW) elements too with old Diablo.

Will I get this game? Maybe. I don't have time (just wasted 3.75 hours!), online requirement, and a bit expensive. I will wait...

Finished the beta, and it took me some hours, because I destroyed every single destructible thing in the game. My opinion: THIS IS IT?! This took a decade to become what it is? The gameplay is dumbed down, the graphics are BLAND, and in addition to this the Ubisoft-like always online "protection" (which won't protect ANYTHING after a day, a week, or at max. a month)? Nope. Not giving you $60 or $50 for this, BlizzaVision. If this wasn't a BlizzaVision game, it would be criticised for horribly outdated graphics, generic gameplay, and a lot more. This would be a 65 to 70 points game on metacritic for sure. Blizzard is DEAD, long live BlizzaVision or ActiBlizz. Valve and the indies are all that's left to pc gamers after Blizz and Bioware were killed by their buyers just like e.g. Westwood before them. And now it's Apple "in talks" with Valve. Great.
Consoles? I owned two: a Pong clone and an Atari 2600. And that's it.

*** Had to edit to add this (after reading a few other posts). Several of you are posting about the disconnects from the server(s) and are unhappy about it... ARE YOU SERIOUS? IT'S A STRESS TEST. They are giving us a chance to try their game FOR FREE BEFORE IT'S RELEASED. We should be greatful to have the chance and you should EXPECT connection issues in a stress test otherwise they're not doing their job... Am I the only one that sees it this way???????

I hope so, but probably not.

What's the purpose of a stress test? To test the servers under "real world" conditions. The idea is to "stress" the servers with lots of people to mimic what will happen post-release, and make sure things work ahead of time.

From that comes two things - first off, yes, they are letting us play the game "for free", in that they aren't charging money, but it's not like they aren't getting anything from the deal. It would be just as easy to say "Blizzard is getting all this testing done on their game, and they aren't even paying the people they have testing for them!" This is a trade situation - they allow us to play the game, we test their servers for them. They aren't doing us favours.

Second, ideally the servers should be fine already. The game is less than a month from release, that's not a lot of time to fix any problems with the servers they find. If we can excoriate Ubisoft for it, I don't see why Blizzard should be spared. The fact that we're getting to play the Starter Edition demo before release shouldn't let them off the hook.

IMO they've sadled a fun single player game with a horrible client/server setup. It only exists to protect an additional revenue stream - it doesn't add any value to the game for me.

It's a huge disappointment that the scariest part of the game is server disconnection.

Right you are... default is key 'Z' (for ZOOM!).

Just finished a couple hours of play with the step-son... fun as hell. Anyone that loved D2 should love D3. Same type of deal with improved graphics and mechanics... I'm looking forward to the full release more than ever now! Blizzard definately did NOT let me down! I think some people are placing unrealistic expectations on this game. Even in Beta I am very impressed!

In The Netherlands their are stores that will sell it below $50,-.

Some of us may claim they're not susceptible to hype. I envy those people if they are honest. I personally feel like a weak-willed moron. I played this beta and know and see and feel that it's just another "Diablo Clone", not any better than Titan Quest or Sacred 2. But still I'm 70% sure I'll buy it because the world makes such a pleasant fuss about the game.

I try so goddamn hard to see why this game is indeed "something else" -- something that does things so great that it stands out between the other Diablo clones. But I think there's nothing there. In fact, thinks like the onlie DRM make the game worse than most. And no Attribute Points? Really!? I admit that the Runes feature is cool, though. But Sacred 2 had that already in a similar fashion anyway.

Yeah, I dunno... $60 for this? Ouch.

It's okay, I was enjoying it, but I'm thinking more like $40, tops. I'll probably buy it and enjoy it when it hits that price, but unless there is a *lot* more content in the remaining acts, $60 is a hard price to swallow.

Sorry Ma'am, but that is one UGLY baby.

Besides the horrible graphics and horrible online only DRM...

I can't scroll in to look at my character in a 3D game? Jeez, even Torchlight had this with 1/200th of the budget.

My character felt separated from the background, like it was done by two different artists, just felt "detached". Felt wierd and looked wierd.

I appreciate Blizz having an Open Beta Weekend to conduct a stress test. They have a LOT of work to do. Logging in felt very MMO'ish to me, I believe this game will have a lot of queues the first month or so, going to irritate a lot of people, especially those who just want to dungeon crawl by themselves. I remember D2 having a tough start, but at least with D2 you had a large segment playing offline to lighten the load, now it's all B.NET, won't be pretty for a while. Enjoy that AH...

On the 'positive side' - It brought back some fond memories of playing a Diablo game, seems like it's been an enternity.

*If* I actually ever do buy this game, it won't be for a long while. Seeing the game in person makes it easier for me to skip it with games like T2/GW2 and others coming out. Still enjoying Skyrim until those come along. I think another poster mentioned GW2 beta next weekend.

Thanks for the memories Diablo, but you lost me at 3. Maybe someday you'll patch in a true offline SP, but based on what I heard (we "renters" just get a game client, not the engine), I'm not sure if it is even possible.

You know I was half enjoying myself in the game, I had some minor gripes but the game was fun. Not fun enough to pay $60 for but whatever.

But then, without warning, Game Terminated.

Go fuck yourself blizzard. Apparently the server died or something because I was rudely stopped from playing and all I can feel at this point is contempt. Take this stinking piece of shit and get out of my sight.

Uninstalled, I say good day.

Finally got into the Open Beta for D3. Brings back a tonne of memories.

I like it, even though it is the same formula as D1 and D2.

Wish I had the free time to play it as I did back in the good 'ol day as well.

Ah well.

137. D3 Open Beta Apr 21, 2012, 13:23 Paranoid Jack

D3 is entertaining to a point but also lacking considering it's been in development for damn near twelve years. When I finished my first play through of the Beta I had no great desire to start a new character. I had to ask myself what is missing? For me it's several things.

First the skill trees of D2 added so much more to the growth of your character. Doubt we are going to see that here. Yeah, the ruins were added with their latest scramble to retool the game. Still its not enough. On my last Wizard play through I had dozens of runes yet it didn't add much to the excitement of my character's growth. It just feels like the game has been streamlined.

Second even though this is only Act I the loot drops for the Wizard were horrible. I think I found three items that were different/somewhat better than the items I already had. Everything else was for the other classes and/or repeated drops of the same old stuff over and over again. I know this is all random it just seems less exciting to play when you know 99.9% of what you are picking up is just junk to your character. I quickly got to the point where I'd only pick up the magic items just to sell off in an attempt to level up the Blacksmith. Which brings me to my next point.

Third the Blacksmith... I unlocked him to the second to last level yet he could only make marginally better items than those couple I had already found. I spent thousands and thousands of coin upgrading him and that is all he could make for my class? What a let down. I know its a fine line between balance and better loot but this was just another let down on top of the others.

After playing through with a Wizard twice, a Barbarian once, a Witch Doctor once, and partial with the Monk and Demon Hunter I'm thinking the CE is going up for sale soon after I walk out of GameStop. It saddens me because I loved the first two games and have waited for a decade for this?

Played overnight. Took me just under 3 hours to turn over every stone, that includes letting dogs out, eating, bathroom breaks, etc. Was fun. Not 60.00 fun. I will be waiting a while.

Had a couple lag spikes and a few hiccups. Thought it was going to crap out, got a little worried at times. Not sure i like the rune system...I dunno. The crafting seems like it could be fun, but drops seemed better than anything you could make.

Also, even with a wide screen monitor and maxed resolution, seems zoomed in. Big character little space. I hate that.

Not sure how so many players had trouble. I had been in the beta, I hadn't played in a while, but I hopped on. No issues. Though the character wipe had me give up quickly.
