Diablo III Open Beta Weekend

Following indications yesterday that more accounts were being granted access to the Diablo III beta test, the Diablo III Website announces the beta will indeed be opened this weekend to anyone with a Battle.net account for stress testing. The open portion of the beta will begin at 3:00 pm EDT today and will run through Monday at 1:00 pm EDT. The accompanying FAQ explains how this will operate, and notes that while Korean players cannot participate, they will be holding a separate invitation-only event in Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. The invitation only closed beta will continue as planned until May 1st. To get a head start, you can download the client now from Battle.net.

Then there is the red glow around anything you can interact with. Baddies don't need it and it hurts the looks. The simplified gameplay doesn't have to tell you all it's secrets to make it even simpler by glowing red. Come the fuck on.

It installed and runs fine on Win7 x64 for me. I just haven't played it yet since it wouldn't let me in until tonight, when, of course, I had no more time to play. Owell. I'm not encouraged by the comments here, but I'm gonna give it a fair shake if I manage to grab a few hours of playtime this weekend.

There seems to be a problem with that, because it's a well-known enough issue for a player-made fix to be out for it.

That worked for me, but after doing the steps listed there you have to go into the Battle.net agent folder (something like Agent.868) and run the agent.exe file there. Let it complete, then re-run the beta launcher and it should get past the updating setup files.

I was able to get into the game, but it ran like shit after I did so I just kind of gave up. I don't want my first impression of gameplay for a game I've waited this long for to be struggling to get it to even work.

Thanks for the linkies, but yeah, that's way too much effort for me to go through for a beta for a game I'm not even really interested in anyway. I appreciate the help, however.

Someone needs to tell Blizzard that it's not 1999 anymore, and people actually have 64 bit operating systems now...

D3 has already been 10 off at Amazon, Buy.com, and NewEgg. No reason why it wouldn't go cheaper.

You guys dont' look very hard....head over to Amazon. SC2 is $39.99.

Sorry, I assumed you meant "Steam sale" level. Yeah, you can get a few percentage points off, but $39.99 for a game over a year old is a lot in my books. You won't see it at the $5/$10/$15 price points that you can get on Steam.

How is taking features away supposed to make it a better game? And how did they manage to fuck up diablo?

TP is an ability now, you customize skills through Runes. Some abilities can have a knockback or other effects that you can tailor to combat. It's a different setup but there are many possibilities like with skill trees. It didn't really grab me either but I hate repetitive games with superficial stories.

You said "Townperson babble is not [voiced]". So no I didn't say the same thing you did. I was correcting you on that the townspeople dialogue is actually voiced. And that they are not only voiced, but they say more than 1 generic thing, and what they say changes as you progress through the story.

Yeah, my general take as well. I am underwhelmed and disappointed by what they have removed. Some of the new stuff is nice, like the blasksmith for example, but it doesn't make me "forget" the horadric cube...if you know what I mean.

Although, I should point out that since "portals" are now an unlimited power that you gain at an early point in the game, the scrolls aren't needed.

The rest of it..I agree 100%.

the game design is obviously simplified for console (and maybe wow?) players. it is simplified pretty well, but still. please nobody degrade yourselves arguing against this galactic truth.

I have to ask this seriously though, have you even played Diablo 1 or 2, or any other ARPG? Complaining about Diablo being simplified is like complaining that rocks are dense. In the history of computer gaming there hasn't ever been a game series more simplified than Diablo.

To be fair, yes Diablo was always on the simple side, With Diablo 2 however they at least expanded the classes, gave very distinct skill trees that allowed for many different builds of the same type of class. Honestly I don't see that is even possible here. I realize it's a beta and stuff is locked but it almost looks like you only have 4 skills a class, with a defensive skill tossed in here or there for good measure, things that were previously attack skills using D2 as the example. Like the Wizard gets a frost nova as a defensive skill and it appears to do no damage just freezes enemies.

I realize they had to further simplify the game for the consoles, I get that, but what's here, at least in this beta is so simplified to the point that I'm amazed it took them this long to get this game out the door.

Considering work on Diablo 3 originally started in 2000, it makes one wonder just how many times this project was rebooted between their shift to WoW development and the closure of Blizzard North in 2005. Hell I wonder if any of those Condor folks who pitched Diablo 1 in the first place are even still at Blizzard at this point.

The Rune systems offers some customization, some of the runes drastically change some abilities. That effectively takes the place of the Diablo 2 skill tree, but it also allows you to not have to re-roll a character every time you want to try a different build. Realistically, how many different skills did you ever use on a character in Diablo 2 anyway? 3? 4? Maybe five for some particularly wacky builds, but it never got more complicated than 2 mouse buttons and a couple F-key keybinds. Well now they've just move the F-key bindings to a hotbar (and the skill binds are completely cutomizable if you enable Elective Mode in the menu). I am disappointed at the removal of stat allocation, but stats didn't really matter in Diablo/2 other than attaining a certain level of strength or intelligence to be able to use a particular piece of unique or set armor. You can't really blame that on consoles either, there plenty of RPG/ARPGs on console that have stat allocation, if they really wanted it in the game they could have put it in.

I just imagine that most of the people bitching (not particularly in this thread either) are bitching because A) they've already decide they hate the game because of the DRM and RMAH, so they'll grasp at any reason possible to hate t more, B) they are the same people that would complain if the game was a carbon copy of Diablo 2 with DX11 graphics.

As for your last point, I imagine hardly any. There are those that split off to make Torchlight, and those that left to make ArenaNet and Flagship Studios. The bottom line for me is Diablo 3 is a fun game, and the changes aren't as drastic as some people make them out to be.

yes. diablo 3 is further simplified. very deliberately, and with much consternation they simplified it. they were still removing things last year.

diablo 1 is super simple so overall it is possible that diablo 3 is similarly simple. they trade some features.

but diablo 2 definitely has more going on, good or bad, than diablo 3.

It's not a microtransaction game at all. There's going to be a paid auction house, yes, but that's all player run. And there's really no need to use it. The way I look at it is basically like all the D2 websites where you could buy items. Instead of having to go to a 3rd party, you can now do it in-game. Did I buy anything from those websites? Nope. Would I buy anything in D3? Nope.

Blizzard makes a fraction of each sale, but "supposedly" that's just for auction upkeep costs. I guess we'll see how much the fraction is when the game comes out.

And as others have pointed out, good luck with the discount, I haven't seen Starcraft II drop much in price since it's come out, and I've been watching (on and off).

I just spent a hour playing. Yeah, New Tristam looks like shit, all of the outdoor areas look like shit. I think they're supposed to look dim. foggy and damp. They may have gone a little too far but once you get into the dungeons where you're supposed to be - it's beautiful Blizzard fare.

Eh The dungeons don't look much better either imo. This game really looks like it should have shipped about 8 years ago. I'm amazed at just how shitty the graphics and animations are.

Sigh, what a crappy way to install a game.

Download the 44meg installer. Okay. Run it, and it needs to update setup files. This takes about 30 mins on my admittedly shitty connection. Then I get to the actual install menu, so I select where I want to install, etc. The real download starts.

Four hours later or so, it crashes, for whatever reason. Blizzard's crash reporter asks me what I was doing when it crashed. Um, I was trying to install your game?

I hope that at least my progress for the download has been saved. Dbl click the installer again. Nope. Not only has my progress not been saved, but right now it's UPDATING THE DAMN SETUP FILES AGAIN.

Other than Origin, I can't ever remember an installer being more fucking shitty than this.

Anyway, I guess my decision to not be interested in this game anyway was well made.

Not funny at all...graphic is complete crap, game is worst than D2 and somehow I already dont feel any need to play again Even Mythos was soo much better and went bankrupt in months.

And after I downloaded another 25Gb TERA online that proved to be a complete shit too....sux games are done for idiots brainwashed console kids these days .

I still hope GW2 will be somehow better; at least they saved me 150 USD cause I'll deff NOT BUY THESE shitty games
