Well sony agreed with you, so they took out hardware backwards compatibility first, then software.

IMHO its somewhat good to drive initial sales into a new console, because people are happy their last gen games are still playable on it. But after a bit, everyone who cared about that feature has one already, and the new people to it don't have any old games anyway.

For Sony, you can still buy the PS2 with no problem, so BC isn't a biiig issue, except for people that wanted the games upscaled. For the XBOX, though, MS stopped producing them *immediately* when the 360 was released.

I don't and likely never will own an iPhone but I know a number of people who have or still do. Any iPhone that's 2 years old or more becomes significantly slower with the iOS update that comes out with the newest one. The 3GS running iOS 5 was a bit of a mess that got corrected to a point but generally Apple is not concerned with supporting any product more than 2 years old. Referred to by many as the Apple Treadmill. Given that we have 3 year cell phone contracts in Canada, that's a major problem. Honestly, Android's not much better though and Windows Phone probably will end up a similar way. Forced obsolescence is what's making the cell phone makers their massive profits right now and allowing people to keep their phones for any kind of reasonable time period screws with their business model. Pretty sad.

Yeah, I expect the same with phones.

But I'm also the guy that thinks backwards compatibility is a stupid waste of money and effort in consoles, so...

WP has had many software upgrades that have been rolled out for free.

Yup, and the next major update comes in June.

Lots of Android phones get updates but get cut off at a true version change. WP7 phones got WP7.5. It remains to be seen if they'll get WP8, but given that WP7 hardware is pretty much 2010 technology it may not make sense for them to get the newest OS as of Holiday 2012.
I don't have an iPhone so I don't know how their version upgrades go, but I've heard anecdotally that iPhone 3Gs can run iOS5 but do so very, very poorly.

And while it's true that people running out and buying the Lumia 900 will feel they're buying something already obsolete, they also bought it for half the price of cutting edge phones. It was a $99 phone (less on Amazon, right?) Do you expect a $99 to be as future proof as a $199 or $299 phone? I believe several $99 Verizon Droid models never got a very large bump, but I'm not sure. I do remember when the first Droid was officially cut off from upgrades, though, and the outrage that hit.

Life must be an almost unbearable burden for those who cannot distinguish between cell phones and computers. So sad.

Considering this happens with Android phones every day...

And considering people love to say that consoles hold PC games back and we shouldn't be slaves to outdated hardware rather than cutting some ties and allowing for newer, better software...
