Creston Agreed....
From what I have seen so far with Windows 8 and the whole Metro thing, it just looks flat and clunky IMO. Seriously, you look at that user screen with all those tiles and they look flat and clunky - the tiles have no 3D visual depth to them and the OS 'visually' looks like a step back to me. Functionally, I'm sure they incorporated a lot of nice and streamlined features, but graphically the UI looks like something an amateur coder created: simple bordered/lined tiles with different colors and NO esthetic depth/texture/3D appeal.
Windows 7 64 bit is what I’ll be sticking with for the time being……

Win8 will be the "Skip it" version.
Win95 - Good Win98 - Bad Win98SE - Good WinME - Bad WinXP - Good Vista - Bad 7 - Good 8 - Bad
It's just how this always works out. |

Creston I almost put that, but until I try Windows 8 I can't say for certain. The only real change I know about the desktop side is the lack of a start button, which doesn't concern me. I assume there are memory handling changes that are desirable. I am not paying close attention and won't until launch. I have no plans to build a new PC for a while and won't consider upgrading OS until I do, so it doesn't matter to me.
The Metro side, though, is clearly not aimed at us and questionable to me as a whole. I just don't get why they think anyone will want to use that with a mouse. I get wanting a unified OS, but this seems to be either the wrong time or the wrong way. The thing is that other than Metro, Windows 8 is basically Windows 7 SP2. There are a few nice features in it (such as being able to reimage your OS from Windows itself), but by and large, it's just Windows 7 with a stupid new GUI.
So why upgrade? Even if you build a new PC, you can just reinstall your Windows 7?
Now, if you don't have Windows 7, I can see going to Win8 and registry hacking the shit out of Metro, but since most PC users will do that registry hack anyway, essentially turning Win8 back into Win7, I see no reason why the large majority of users would ever upgrade. The enterprise sure as fuck isn't going to upgrade to Win8.
So does MS really think they're going to sell 50 million tables with Win8 or something? Well, I guess maybe they do; Balmer is arrogant and stupid enough to believe that.

Alas, they don't. Indeed, wasted opportunities on their part. Look at what Steam has built over the past ten years. Even financial quarter obsessed EA sees the long term opportunities. Microsoft has just been short sighted in building out on their largest established platform. It's not surprising really, they're a big company with a lot of cruft and middle management types.
It's all good, do you want them on your side? I'm not sure I do, seeing what they have done with the Xbox 360 (sold mine last week btw, had barely turned it on all year). |

Alas, they don't. They do care. They want it to die, so that everyone can be on their wonderful xbox. This isn't at all true. They're not dumb enough to think everyone has the means to the Xbox, but everyone has a PC with Windows.
But they don't put many resources into PC gaming. Do you blame them, really? They put their entertainment resources into the Xbox and into their Phone department. It's a clear business model - they make money on the hardware and the software. Where do they make money on PC gaming? They don't make it on the hardware. And software? People either use Windows or they do not - games are no longer a clear determining factor there. If Microsoft makes gaming better for Ubisoft and Ubisoft sells more PC games where does Microsoft see a return on that time and capital?
The GFWL team is absolutely committed and loves PC gaming, they just don't have the resources to do much with it. As a result the software more or less sucks. But let's not sit here and act like it's personal or like someone is in a board room going "Step 1: Screw PC gamers." It's just that it's pretty impossible to create a convincing business plan for Microsoft in PC gaming. WP8 will change that by making Windows an ecosystem with an app store. That likely will mean nothing to us as hardcore gamers that will never touch the Metro side of the OS. |

Microsoft has just gained the much coveted FIVE dismissive wanks! Congrats, Redmond!
I love how they target the "Core PC Gamer" with two whole fucking games in a year.
Windows 8 is going to be a massive flop. It'll make Vista look like a succesful business project.

Because improving PC gamimg isn't Microsoft goal. Their goal is sell more Xboxes, and every game sold as PC and not Xbox is loss for them. They have to make our experience as miserable as possible, so we would go to promised land and paise them how Xbox Live is so much better than GFWL. |

Ok I think I understand their problem now, they think all PC gamers have an Xbox and therefore they need to continue this crappy service so people can link their gamertags.
Dear Microsoft, not everyone has an Xbox. You are free to kill GFWL now. We cool? Hello?
Seriously though, the highest compliments I've heard over it is Xbox users like being able to boost their score with PC games (like that does anything) and that for some people it isn't broken. High praise indeed. |

Will the ‘vision’ in the release of Windows 8 be new and improved? After all these years and releases, I have my doubts. Let’s start a pool: Who thinks they are going to get it right this time?
