Syndicate was a decent enough game but compared to other shooters on PC, it fell short.
Lack of options in rail shooter make for a disappointing little package.
The variety of baddies was sad and the controls were terrible.

I'm sure all of that was GAME's fault.

Didn't realize it wasn't on Steam. Maybe that's why I didn't even know it came out. Whereas I check for new Steam games every day. I'm like a drug addict with Steam.

pitty Syndicate isn't allowed to be sold here in Australia because of ratings classification.

I'd love to know how Steam's sales figures compare to other download services and the remaining B&M places.

I'd love to see how much their numbers jump during their holiday sales...

Honestly, I would think not being on Steam hurt it way more than not being at GAME, whatever the hell that is.

It's a toss-up whether not being available in the largest UK chain hurt more than not being on Steam. The UK market isn't that large, but the online PC demand for this probably wasn't large either.

There's no question that they lost sales to the problems with GAME, whether they are significant or not is debatable.

Having completed Syndicate before EA ships it next week, Swedish developer Starbreeze has let several employees go. The company employed 93 individuals while working on the FPS reboot, 25 of which have been dismissed, according to GamesIndustry.biz (registration required). Starbreeze chairman Peter Tornquist has also reportedly resigned.

Correct, it wasn't EA that did the firing. Still, it doesn't instil confidence in buying a new game when you read info like this - it red flags it as a "pump and dump" release.

Oh, I agree. While it was due to another project being canceled, considering they only really had two teams, and one team was working on something else, the team that had some people let go was obviously mostly the Syndicate team.

It doesn't necessarily mean anything, but it also doesn't bode well.

The initial trailer looked cool. But I didn't even see that it had shipped, and after I did learn of it, I heard it was full of bugs. Not to mention I've also heard it was a piss-poor console port. I'll buy it when it's $10, maybe less.

To make matters worse EA pretty much fired Starbreeze after release, no after sale support - no game ships without bugs.

They did a good job with Chronicles of Riddick but after reading the reviews for this one I didn't even have one bit of interest in it.

The music and art style was a turn off, I'm not interested in a JJ Abrams "Lens Flare the Video Game", his "style" of movies are a big enough turn off.

EA can't fire Starbreeze - it's an independent developer that works with multiple publishers and EA doesn't own any of it. EA did cancel their Jason Bourne game, which likely led to the layoffs, but they didn't fire anyone and didn't do anything specifically to the Syndicate team, they just canceled a different project they had contracted out to Starbreeze.

It's the pre-eminent B&M store in the UK. Back when I was a lad, that's where I'd browse through their shelves and shelves of PC games. I occasionally wander in there, look at their pitiful selection of PC games and wonder why I bother. The last time I did see something interesting, I left the shop and looked it up on Metacritic and Steam.

I think its some random retailer in UK that sells the physical retail boxes, I know they sell online, I'm not sure if they have B&M stores too.

It couldn't be the general blandness of the game they released could it? Everyone I talked to who played it and virtually every review all state something to the effect of "it was generally fun, but completely formulaic and utterly forgettable".

Honestly, I would think not being on Steam hurt it way more than not being at GAME, whatever the hell that is.

It might be that people hate Skrillex and are getting tired of dubstep. I'm not sure if the music in-game was the same style, but the trailers were annoying. This means you too, annoying Microsoft commercials.

Syndicate was hurt by it not appealing to anyone. It was too far removed from the original to get old diehards interested and not Call of Duty enough to get newer generation fans on board. About the only thing it managed to do well was co-op.
