Space Quest Creators Plan New Adventure

The Two Guys from Andromeda Website declares the return to gaming of Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy, creators of Sierra On-Line's classic Space Quest series (thanks Kotaku). They announce that following their "brief 25+ year hiatus" they are preparing to create a new space adventure, and they are making use of social media to involve the audience in the direction of the game, though interestingly, have not yet opted for the trendy Kickstarter route just yet. Loyal reader nin points out an interesting aspect of this in a Rock, Paper, Shotgun Q&A from all of five days ago where Al Lowe and Paul Trowe suggest a Crowe/Murphy reunion was unlikely, so apparently the rapid pace of change in the world of game development even extends to dealing with a 35 year-old intellectual property.

Put the boo-b-gone on the fence so the cat gets it on its back and then release the cat/skunk inside to clear out the place.

LOL I remember one particularly frustrating "puzzle" back in the day in the first "Kyrandia" game, there was this fucking door you just could not find any way in to, which usually culminates in trying every item in your inventory on it..

Well the answer turned out to be using the "jar" you picked up earlier on the door to make the door "ajar". Fucking retarded. This was the side of adventure games I didn't much appreciate, when people stepped a bit too into the world of the abstract to have you solve puzzles that they could have just taken a bit more time and written better.

I replayed simply alt-tabbing back and forward to check the walkthrough.

Well, if you'd had the hint book with the marker that put this ugly mustard colored ink on the white pages you wouldn't have had that problem.

I have fond memories of a lot of the adventure games I played when I was younger, and went back and played a few for the sake of nostalgia...just to be reminded how absurd and frustrating many of them actually are. Constantly getting stuck because the way to continue makes no sense whatsoever. "Ohhh!! I was supposed to chew bubblegum while blowing up a balloon before spraying water on it to create an extra dimensional portal to teleport me over this wall, okay that makes sense!" Spent half the playing time on my Monkey Island, Leisure Suit Larry, and Space Quest games I replayed simply alt-tabbing back and forward to check the walkthrough.

Oh (speaking of Baba Yaga), and I'd drop $100 in a heartbeat if the ex sierra alum doing these things did an update of Hero's Quest/Quest for Glory 1...that game was sooooo epic!

Agreed! Many of the HQ/QFG games were among my favorites, I much preferred the rpg elements added to the game as opposed to regular adventure gaming. Not only did it add options to solve quests in much different ways compared to more linear adventures, but combat with monsters became a regular thing too, as well as your proficiencies having an effect on how things played out in the adventure portion.

I would be happy if they even did a complete remake with added elements thrown in. Hell even if it leaned more towards an action-rpg style for fighting I wouldnt mind the switch from turn based, if it was done right. Theres alot of good source material to work with there, maybe it's time for a group to step up and tackle this one? The fan remakes have been the best thing to happen to any of these old titles, besides Lucasart's Monkey Island remakes..

Aah well either way its good to talk about this stuff, hopefully someone picks it up eventually.

Until then there's always exoDOSAdv, eXoDOSRPG, and exoDOSSrategy

Nice to see Kickstarter is in vogue, even if they're not using it 'yet.'

QfG2 was redone by one of the groups that's redone some of the KQ games:

You're too young, whippersnapper. I wasn't into adventure games, and I remember them even though I suck in this genre. I found them funny.

No, more like I was still into PnP, BBS door games and MUDs at the time.
OK, those are good too. I'd rather play those instead of adventure games!

I was the same way...so many times I thought the spelling was correct, and then you'd have to go back 2-3 commands to have it list the description before you realized you were missing a letter here or there.

I look back on those games now very fondly, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't frustrating at the time.

Without spoiling anything - I'd encourage everyone to check out Saints Row 3. Not only is it an excellent game, but there's a specific txt adventure part that had me laughing my ass off.

I learned how to spell the word "cupboard" from playing the original King's Quest, lol. (Baba Yaga's hut.. maybe?) I'd have to say my spelling in general got 500x better just from having to learn the proper way to spell things in text parser games.

It was a great learning tool for a kid growing up in the 80's =)

>Open cabnet

What's a cabnet?

>Look

You see a desk, with a cabinet overhead.

>Open Cabinet

You open the cabinet and see 3 books.

>get book

Which book?

>LOOK AT BOOKS

You don't have a book!

>EXAMINE BOOKS IN CABINET

What?

>Look in cabinet

You see 3 books in the cabinet. A red book, a yellow book, and a large green book.

>get green book

You attempt to remove the large green book from the cabinet, but it's so heavy it falls and hits you on the head, killing you. Load previous game?

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Good times!

If you want, try the remake of SQ2 free, link is below. If you like it, you'd probably like the original games.

25 years is only a couple of minutes in Andromedean time, I'm guessing these two are still very much on top of their game =)

Personally this is very exciting news as I grew up playing series like space quest, and always enjoyed their humor, especially so after revisiting them years later =)

If you haven't played Infamous Adventures' Space Quest 2 remake, DO IT: http://www.infamous-adventures.com/sq2/index.php#

So, so good

It's free BTW

I downloaded that one, but someone (a new poster) was claiming that when they uninstalled it it took some other files/folders with it, which caused me to never install it. Not sure if that was a fluke, if the person was mistaken, or a bug.

edit: This was the thread, and it looks like it was resolved with a new packaged install.
