Shadowrun Returns $1M Milestone

The Kickstarter Page for Shadowrun Returns celebrates the $1,000,000 in pledges Harebrained Schemes' upcoming Shadowrun revival has attracted. This results in this trailer explaining how these funds will be used to add more elements to the game, and outlining their next goal, saying if they reach the $1.5 million mark they will construct a "backer's only exclusive mission" as a "little reward." The clip concludes saying they have "some pretty twisted ideas" of what to do if they receive even more funding (as if "more elements" wasn't twisted enough). Interestingly, some of the comments express unhappiness at the prospect of exclusive content for backers.

And as much as it pains me, but reality is that customers are the ones making this a success or not. Funders only make it happen.

I think Weisman and Fargo probably aren't that worried about how well it sells beyond the backers. That's the road of the publishers: "YOUR GAME MUST SELL 10 MILLION COPIES OTHERWISE IT'S TEH FAILZ!!"

They have enough money to fund their studio to make the game they want to make. They are making it for the people who put up their money, not for some potential Ritalin popper somewhere who gets bored if he sees the same screen for four seconds.

Fargo has already said as much, that he doesn't care about potential customers. He's making this for the people that put up their money, which is exactly what he should do.

That's pretty much exactly it. These devs don't share the same mentality as publishers. They aren't looking to sell 10 million units within a month or pump out DLC on a monthly basis after release. They just want enough money to make the games they want to make. If the games continue to sell well after release, that's great, but it's not what they are counting on.
