You're talking about a group of guys that implemented an option for "old-school mode," wherein the game does not automatically generate your map and recommends you keep graph paper at the ready... I think they'd be offended by such requests (and how tedious would it be to deselect the last spell you cast whenever you want to use a different one?). However, you do find spell tomes that you can hold on to for as long as it takes to memorize them. Or, you know, just write them down. Pen and paper is basically a peripheral for this and other types of classic games.
