Tribes Ascend: Launches

The Tribes: Ascend website is now accepting signups for Hi-Rez Studios' revival of this beloved multiplayer shooter series. They offer client downloads and account registration for the free-to-play game, and here's word on what to expect:

Hi-Rez Studios, independent developer of AAA free-to-play online games, today announced the official release of Tribes: Ascend. The fast-paced, sci-fi multiplayer shooter has completed Beta testing and is now a live PC game available for digital download.

Tribes: Ascend is the world's fastest shooter. The game features jetpacks, skiing, vehicles, team-based gameplay, and cutting-edge graphics using Unreal 3 technology. With this official release, the game is available for download directly from the developer at www.tribesascend.com.

The Tribes: Ascend release build includes 9 playable classes, 5 game-modes, and 16 unique maps.

Recent additions include the CTF map Raindance, as well as a new game-mode called Capture and Hold. The Release build also includes a preview of the Custom Server functionality that will soon be available to players.

"For the past 15 months, we've had a very passionate dev team working hard toward this goal," said Todd Harris, Hi-Rez Studios COO. "Along the way some publishers told us modern gamers couldn't handle an FPS that was fast-paced and skill-based. We believe otherwise. Players seem to agree since we've had well over 500,000 join our Beta. We're excited to now grow the community further with the official release."

Hi-Rez Studios also released a summary of Beta statistics including:

        • 575,000+ beta participants
        • 150 million player kills
        • Over 3 million Blue Plate Specials
        • Over 3 million flag captures

I was a beta tester and I just couldn't get into this game. It didn't really feel like a Tribes game to me. When I played the original two games, skiing was just an exploit that was very uncommon (probably became far more common after I stopped playing). Now skiing is a normal part of the game, so combat just feels like ranged jousting matches where players zip by each other taking shots until it devolves into a high speed chase where one is simply outnumbered. Now before those of you that like this playstyle flame me, let me just say this is my own personal opinion. Go on an enjoy the game as is, but I'll pass on this one.

wut?

Skiing started out as a glitch in the physics of the original Starsiege Tribes but was instantly adopted by the player community like one week into release, scripts were made so you didn't have to pound the crap out of your spacebar, just hold it down. Tribes 2 featured it out of the box, as did Tribes: *barf* Vengeance.

You can buy stuff in-game... with real money, XP / Gold to unlock Weapons/Classes faster, or Skins.

I remember Tribes 1. It was awesome back in the day. I highly doubt it will ever be eclipsed.

Tribes: Ascend is the world's fastest shooter.

As much as I love this game this is simply not true. I believe this title is still held by Quake 1/ezQuake or Quake 3 CPMA.

Were beta accounts reset? Because if not you just pretty much proved his point. You have access to most classes and weapons by now, new players have not.

I do hope they have at least some "newbie" servers with rank and unlock limitations

When I installed Global Agenda over a year ago I discovered that it had installed system services to allegedly keep the game up to date.

Really? You need to install a system service running on my system just to do updates to your shitty game?

People give EA and Origin a hard time but give Hi-Rez a pass on stuff like this?

This is a pay-to-win game, shame they decided to go this direction.

Actually, it isn't. I've been playing since the beginning of the closed beta and I haven't spent a dime, and I do just fine.
