0x10cͨ Screenshots

Markus" notch" Persson tweets the release of some prototype screenshots from 0x10cͨ, Mojang's upcoming space game. He's also added a note to the section mentioning "hard science fiction" to back off that a bit: "Update: GAH, NO! I'm focusing on fun gameplay instead. I still want to get corrected on glaring scientific errors, though."

Boy, you old gaming Geezers have no fucking imagination at all. Notch, I am inspired by your old school, clinky 3d graphics. Save me from the cancer that expects everything to have high detail normal maps, and has so quickly forgotten the spirit minecraft brought us. If you are honestly complaining of the graphics now.. you have.

Can you just pretend that Notch is making you feel young again too? Just for a moment. Remember when you gizzed over quake graphics. try to think that way again, or has the dark side of "13 year old call of duty graphics" infected your gaming soul.

This is a bit unfair. For one, you mock CoD as "13 year old graphics" yet you say people are stupid for mocking graphics that look out of date.

For another, everyone overlooked Minecraft's ugly graphics (and they were ugly) because they were functional. The functionality made the ugliness somewhat charming.
Ugliness doesn't seem to be functional in this game, so people are more critical of it. That, plus part of the appeal of space sims was always that they were beautiful.

I agree it's early to be concerned, as these are potentially placeholder, but I think it's clear that people want graphics to be not-ugly. Not necessarily state of the art, but not-ugly. I'd wager Notch incorporates art direction in a few months.

As for why Notch revealed this, I honestly do not think Notch has much marketing savvy. Not because he couldn't, but because it is meaningless to him. He does what he wants, and if you like it you buy it. He's just a guy coding something and enjoys sharing it and discussing it. Again, that's his charm. I do not think he gave any thought to whether this would hurt or help him, he just wanted to show people what he was working on, not for his own benefit but because he thinks he's doing something fun and likes to talk about it.

A lot of people want to see it. I know I enjoy seeing a game come together from the very beginning. And he WANTS constructive criticism. Of course that means filtering through all the bullshit from the more intellectually stunted gamers.

Notch isn't a really marketing minded guy. He's a developer. He has an almost naive approach to communicating with the fans. He posts things assuming fans will understand that nothing is set in stone in a game that's been in development for a few weeks.

I think that kind of openness and honesty is refreshing, and since he's not enslaved to some oppressive publisher, he has the freedom to do it.

That may very well be the point - Notch might be operating from the school of "no publicity is bad publicity". He's certainly gotten people talking, now, hasn't he?

Honestly, I think what you're going to see isn't going to be too far removed.

Notch as a whole is a flagrant violation of Game Marketing 101. It's gotten him in trouble on many occasions, but it's part of his charm. He's 100% open and, as far as I know, honest, with his fans. If he's thinking something you know it. If he's working on something you see it.

Consider this not an effort to gain sales but a guy letting people see how he develops games.

If it has fun mechanics/game-play, people will overlook the shitty graphics, just like Minecraft. He'll just lose out on the people who see crappy graphics and say "that game looks horrible, no way".

Judging from a few of the shots though, it doesn't look locked into the cube motif.

He has said that he's going for plain polygons with no textures, as the "style" of the game, so it's fair to criticize that aspect. If he was worried about people criticizing alpha quality screen shots, he wouldn't be posting them online...

Personally I'm going to have fun watching this. Maybe not for the same reasons as everyone else, but it will be amusing to see how this plays out. (I don't expect much)

Well, these graphics serve no purpose unless building out of cubes.
As others have said, though, it's way too early to be concerned about graphics.

You build using a rudimentary and easy to use in-game 3D model editor. You're not restricted to cubes, but given the tools at your disposal you'll be building using relatively simple shapes.

High res textures on simple shapes often looks terrible. Especially when you can stretch and scale them.

It's not cubes, but it is a very retro TIE Fighter era style.

0x10 sounds like much more an actual game with mechanics rather than a sandbox "do anything".

He said it would involve "hard science", accessing onboard systems, fixing things. Isn't possible to achieve that without bumbling around in these cube like graphics?

If he isn't a one trick pony, perhaps he can devise an alternate 2D tiled way of doing the graphics that still allow customisation. I mean, how many space ship interiors can you really design using just 1 meter x 1 meter cubes?

It's a good thing this game doesn't involve building things out of cubes then. (Well, you could, but your shit would be pretty ugly.)

This guy's giving everyone the full details of the game as he develops it. Some people like seeing how a game is made: viewing the progress from step one to step seven million. It's not like he's personally emailing the screenshots to you and asking you to comment. If you don't want to see 0x10^c or whatever until it's done, then just ignore it until it's done.
