Ships Ahoy - Legend of Grimrock

The Legend of Grimrock Website announces the release of Almost Human's dungeon crawler, which is available at a 10% discount from their site, GOG.com and Steam. Here's a release trailer, and here's a bit on the game:
Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart but a modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exiling them to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to their captors, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations long perished now. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.

The game brings back the oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords could be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode which disables the luxury of the automap! Are you ready to venture forth and unravel the mysteries of Mount Grimrock?

Hope you can get it working, game is a lot of fun for such an old school throwback concept.

I had one "blackout" episode where I thought the game was going to crash but it came back, four hours in and that's the only glitch to report.

Just make sure there aren't any monsters nearby. I woke up to an unpleasant surprise....

I turned on 3D Vision with this.. looks good. The creatures look great in 3D.

Also, to the person asking about healing potions, they're there. You can craft them also after finding the right stuff. I think I found that stuff on level 3.

edit: Sorry for crapping up the launch thread. Game looks great for the 10 seconds it runs before locking my video card... I need to hurry to kill the process so that it doesn't eventually bluescreen if I let it go.

Turn vsync on in the options. It seems the menu screen has no FPS cap, which causes some fast video cards to overheat. That might explain your crashes.
I think he tried that

Dammit, updating video drivers didn't help, toggling between no vsync, vsync, and triple buffered didn't help either.

Two fuckin games I paid for now with this problem. Wish I knew what it was.

Download speed on Steam is pretty low for some reason... Only averaging about 250Kb per second. WAY way lower than what I usually get. Is it THAT POPULAR? lol. Next one for download is the new Men At War due tomorrow sometime...

Well its at the top of steam best sellers right now. Its outselling skyrim and two pre-orders (one of which is max payne 3).

That's good news, this game does deserve it, it is a gem amidst games. Heck, the more I play the more I realize that at the price it's a veritable steal.

Apparently replay value will by high just for looking around.

If sales are good (and they look very like that already - even on Steam) who know?

At least until the Pirate fuck it up like they apparently did for Bulletstorm 2...

Pirates didn't mess up Bulletstorm 2, the game stunk rotten and anyone with a modicum of taste can see that. The sequel won't get made because of the game being a disaster, not due to piracy.

Fun so far.

Magic system is shit, shit, shit. I was surprised and disappointed to discover that combat is a real-time whack-a-mole clickfest rather than turn-based, but it's not a huge deal. But the option sure would be nice. And where's the goddamn health potions at?? But ya... fun so far.

Run this:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35
You'll notice it says vista & 7 supported.
It will update any needed components of DX9. If you are up to date, it won't do anything.

Also, I don't consider technical help crapping up the thread. If you said ZOMG THIS GAME SUX AND NO ONE SHOULD BUY IT BECAUSE I HATE ANYTHING NOT SHOOTERS, that would be thread crapping

This game is awesome.

Played it for half an hour and brought back so many memories of playing Wizardry in high school that I bought a copy for my friend, too

The big game companies don't make 'em like this anymore, but this game kind of shows that maybe they should.

Yup running certain games as Admin (Rainbow Six Vegas 2 on Steam springs to mind) can often work.

Star Wars the Force Unleashed 2 however myself and many other no joy!

I don't get this game. Why is everyone so excited about it?

Is it turn based?

I haven't gotten to any monsters, mostly because I can't figure out how the mage works with his spells.

If its real time, how do I command 4 characters to do something without it being turn based?

I'm so very confused about this game.

It's like phased base. It's on a timer, it's like turn but if you don't do anything, it will gladly continue on. Bioware'ish.

You have to get a scroll to learn the spells. You don't use them or anything, you learn it as you pick it up. Scroll worthless afterwards.

Right click a magic users hand, click the icon in the scroll, then click the blue swirl. Presto changeo!

Just to nit pick here... You don't use a scroll to 'learn' a spell... It just gives you the 'recipe'... Which you can also find out on your own...

And on the other side, having levels for spells unlocked, but not knowing what they are, is rather annoying... I have most of my points in Fire/Spellcraft, and three lines of Spell: ???... I guess I need to experiment more (fighting the urge to google it).

Just wait till you get 4 at a time : ) Though, I find that easier than the 2-3 wandering separately...

So far it's been pretty fun. I like the combat, and having to constantly maneuver while trying to not get backed into a corner. I still haven't managed to cast a spell with my mage though, as the scrolls I found all required 2 or 3 points in a particular element, and I made the mistake of spreading them out on character creation.

The hunt for secret rooms is fun. Installed the game, and an hour went by without me noticing. I'm wondering how much longevity a game like this can really have, though.

Also, I really hate those damn skeleton warriors.
