Ships Ahoy - Legend of Grimrock

The Legend of Grimrock Website announces the release of Almost Human's dungeon crawler, which is available at a 10% discount from their site, GOG.com and Steam. Here's a release trailer, and here's a bit on the game:

Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart but a modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exiling them to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to their captors, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations long perished now. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.

The game brings back the oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords could be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode which disables the luxury of the automap! Are you ready to venture forth and unravel the mysteries of Mount Grimrock?

Fun so far.

Magic system is shit, shit, shit. I was surprised and disappointed to discover that combat is a real-time whack-a-mole clickfest rather than turn-based, but it's not a huge deal. But the option sure would be nice. And where's the goddamn health potions at?? But ya... fun so far.

I haven't gotten to any monsters, mostly because I can't figure out how the mage works with his spells.

If its real time, how do I command 4 characters to do something without it being turn based?

I'm so very confused about this game.

It's like phased base. It's on a timer, it's like turn but if you don't do anything, it will gladly continue on. Bioware'ish.

You have to get a scroll to learn the spells. You don't use them or anything, you learn it as you pick it up. Scroll worthless afterwards.

Right click a magic users hand, click the icon in the scroll, then click the blue swirl. Presto changeo!

First the game is great, way to update a classic.

That said it makes you remember how it all went down. We had Dungeon Master, we had Eye of the Beholder, then it moved to Ultima Underground, we felt "wow we are really advancing". Wolfenstein, Quake etc. We felt, we moved forward and past lame Dungeon Master etc.

Well after 15 years of being fed FPS this reminds us why this genre shouldn't have gone away. In fact it should have expanded, perhaps Wizardy 8 is along that expansion end of it.

I like this a lot, it's like getting back in the walker again, relearning everything we already done. Now in the future I would like to take this and advance it to where it should have gone all along. Have your Dungeon Masters, have your Quakes. Not one or the other.

Stop the system from restarting when it blue screens, if you haven't done so already. What is Windows reporting as the cause of the blue screen? A specific file or something like IO_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL?

Have you learned any spells yet?

Correct.

Try using onboard instead and see if that makes a difference. If it does, its the sound. If it doesn't, sound is likely not the culprit.

Did you install dx9 and also try running game as admin?

Updated my Realtek drivers anyway, tried playing with and without USB headphones, turned all graphical settings as low as they go, forced executable to always run as administrator... Same behavior

What do you mean by install dx9? I played Batman in dx9... Don't I already have it?

edit: Sorry for crapping up the launch thread. Game looks great for the 10 seconds it runs before locking my video card... I need to hurry to kill the process so that it doesn't eventually bluescreen if I let it go.

Combat is realtime not turn based, be quick with the mouse or ye be dead soon enough.

click on the mage's hand and you can click the runes (upper left is fire spell), you'll come across scrolls that will tell you what runes you need to cast spells.

The game harkens back to a time that predates 3D games like Doom, it's an updated version of those old isometric dungeon crawlers like Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder.

It's a nostalgic trip down memory lane for most of us.

Well the event log is full of the video driver crashing and restarting.

Except for Bastion I don't have issues like this with any game. I play just about every game I own with maxed settings. All of my cards but one have been ATI and I don't run into the tons of issues most people with Nvidia cards say they have with ATI cards.

Looking into updating my audio drivers now but I doubt that's it.

edit: Actually my audio drivers shouldn't matter right? I'm using a USB headset with its own onboard drivers.

Funny, I use ATI and AMD and never have those problems. And yeah I'd make sure all my Realtek drivers are up to date. I doubt it's a vid card issue.

Wish I knew what it was.

The shitty ATi card you paid for. I'm honestly not trolling you or jerking off in random fanboyism. Every ATi product I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with, whether that be discrete cards or laptop chipsets or their more recent integrated video, has been a total fucking nightmare where shit would randomly crash for no apparent reason.

We'd re-image the exact same machine (sans video drivers of course), drop in an Nvidia card, install the drivers...and not have any problem whatsoever.

I'm really sorry this is happening to you. Playing LoG has brought back many happy memories of playing Dungeon Master on my Atari ST and, later, the Eye of the Beholder series.

Is it at all possible to drop in an Nvidia test card and see if the problem continues?

Dammit, updating video drivers didn't help, toggling between no vsync, vsync, and triple buffered didn't help either.

Two fuckin games I paid for now with this problem. Wish I knew what it was.

Get a cheap ass video card online just to see if it fixes your problem. If it does, you at least know where to go from there.

Have you tried installing dx9? (yes even on vista/7). Also, have you tried running the exe as admin?
I dunno what sound you have, realtek? Have you tried updating to latest realtek HD drivers?

Eye of the Beholder is back, finally!. Bless the Almost Human guys, may they sell a fucking million of this.

Yay, really looking forward to this!
The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.
