Ships Ahoy - Legend of Grimrock

The Legend of Grimrock Website announces the release of Almost Human's dungeon crawler, which is available at a 10% discount from their site, GOG.com and Steam. Here's a release trailer, and here's a bit on the game:

Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart but a modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exiling them to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to their captors, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations long perished now. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.

The game brings back the oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords could be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode which disables the luxury of the automap! Are you ready to venture forth and unravel the mysteries of Mount Grimrock?

Yup that's the map I was referring to. Sorry, I should have made that more clear.

Looking at the world map that came with the game I'm halfway expecting them to let us explore more of the world later on. Perhaps sequels or expansions with some of the locations shown would be cool.

I wondered that as well. Seemed odd to include one when (at least) so far, you're only in one dungeon.

I thought there were three other party mates?
There's a 4 member party.

I think they are talking about:
Legend of Grimrock World Map.pdf
which is in the extras folder:
..\Steam\steamapps\common\legend of grimrock\extras
The game takes place in Mount Grimrock in the Dearthfang Ridges, which is located on the right hand side of that world map, about midway.

If anyone doesn't know, the manual is there, as well as blank graph paper to do your own mapping, some concept art, etc.

So anyway, the question is, do they plan to develop this universe? Or was it just a fun project for the artist?

Cool. I will wait for the extras first. BTW, does this game have giant ants? [grin]
No need to wait, its cheap enough at $13 and offers a good amount of playability as it is. Its not exactly short. Its fun to customize the characters and after running through the game on an easier mode and finding out how the skills work, one could crank up difficulty, and play on the hardcore no map option.

No giant ants yet that I've seen

Interesting. I heard that the map doesn't randomize and no mods from one of the videos before the game came out.
Its not random because all the puzzles are specifically designed and tweaked for a particular map layout. Its a campaign. So hopefully when they get mod tools out, there will be mods with additional levels. And you can bet they will offer expansions for the game since its sold this well. They already have the game engine and assets, all they have to do is make some more maps.

I dunno about a demo, but you can see exactly what the gameplay is like from youtube vids.
Yea, I guess no demo since the game is short, no multiplayer, not much replayability, etc.

The game is not short. Plenty of replayability. Lots of secrets and several different classes and class specialization to play with.

Mod tools are coming apparently.

Played last night for maybe half an hour.

Had fun, but someone didn't realize you couldn't free move, which was offputting for all of 2 minutes. I see how this would make a very easy conversion to tablets or phones.

Some of the attributes seem a bit dumb. Why would I want +20 health if I can increase what gives health? I guess it depends on caps, but in games like this in the past directly bumping an attribute like that is a big bump to start and useless to end.

I died after walking into a room too quickly and getting cornered by two monsters. Couldn't walk anywhere. A stupid death that felt almost Nethack-like to me. Almost.

Very interested in putting some real time into it.

Did you get a chance to run that directx updater?

Yeah but it didn't help. Unless I'm mistaken wasn't that just regular ol directx? You were confusing me talking about installing "dx9" since I thought that was included with all directx installations.

DX has had small, periodic updates over time.

Looks like June 2010 was the most recent (for 9)?

But I still think you should swap the card and see what happens... :)

I'm pretty sure that would fix it
I just don't want to monkey with it right now because the card barely fit in the case to begin with and I had a hell of a time dealing with my SATA connections which are near the slot. Basically I want to use my computer today... this might be a project for the weekend. Maybe I'll buy a new card, but it's frustrating that this problem doesn't exist with my other games.

What? No vendor? But how am I going to collect everything I find, store it in chests, and sell it for profit? It goes against my nature not to pick up everything in sight

Heh this reminded me of what I used to do in EOB1 and 2. Found a nice room, started dropping everything in nice piles sorted out by type. I could always go back and grab something I needed. I don't know yet if this game lets you back track from level to level, but it worked great in the EOB series.
So far, yes you can travel between levels. So yeah that's a good idea. Pick a room per level or two and unload, go back if needed.

Since you can annotate the in game map (unless you are playing hardcore with no map), you can even click on the map to put a note, so you can mention where you dropped everything.

Sweet. I haven't had enough time to play. Not even past first level lol. Good to know you can go back and forth on levels.
