Bulletstorm Sequel Cancelled; PC Piracy Mentioned

In spite of EA saying the original "under-performed," a sequel to Bulletstorm was in the works at People Can Fly before being cancelled by parent company Epic Games reports GameSpot, who hear from Epic president Mike Capps on the topic. Mike indicates they have put the Polish developer on a different project they will "be announcing pretty soon," though there is no clue if this is the recently revealed PC game Epic is planning. "We thought a lot about a sequel, and had done some initial development on it, but we found a project that we thought was a better fit for People Can Fly," he said. "We haven't announced that yet, but we will be announcing it pretty soon." He goes on to praise Bulletstorm and says he'd love to go back to the property, "but right now we don't have anything to talk about." Just to stir the pot a little, the story concludes with Capps' comment that sales of the PC version may have been harmed by piracy: "We made a PC version of Bulletstorm, and it didn't do very well on PC and I think a lot of that was due to piracy. It wasn't the best PC port ever, sure, but also piracy was a pretty big problem."

They just don't get it. The problem was that it wasn't a game that PC gamers wanted to play. Those people think that the content of a game has no link with sales.

If people didn't want to play it then it wouldn't have been pirated like crazy.

You can say people didn't want to pay for it, but undoubtedly if piracy was not an option then sales would have been better. While we can debate all day what portion of pirates would otherwise buy a game (low), I don't think anyone would argue none would.
If a game is pirated a million times I think it's safe to say that's 100,000 lost sales. Bulletstorm was pirated more than a million times.

The issue is a lot more complex than that. Personally, I didn't pirate it, but if the game was 15$, I probably would have bought it.

Then you missed out, it was on sale during Christmas, I belive i picked it up for 5 dollars.

So basically you are saying piracy accounts for 10% of lost sales? How exactly did you reach that number, would you care to elaborate?
Another thing, how do you know that Bulletstorm was pirated more then a million times? I for one have not even heard of that game prior to today but apparently more than a million people have and took the trouble to download it. Interesting...

ohhh no pirates were mentioned...I guess the defenders of stealing and hacking will come out!:) Here write me a check, I will take your paycheck and see how you like it!

I also think lack of MP and the fact that they took the family market out of buying the game was a big factor. Blood and gore is one thing (those things are even in the bible), but cussing and all the other garbage...that is a totally different subject.

So you took out the MP market, the family market, and then you add the pirates...Yea, fail! All the honest people were playing a different game...

If you were right, I would be agreeing with you.

The lack of a real multiplayer mode didn't help (they had some weird hybrid co-op thing), I remember a friend of mine telling me he felt genuinely ripped off and he bought it on the 360.

Proof of how clueless they are.

And if I were to correct that statement. It was one of the **WORST** PC ports ever. Dead Space and Borderlands were better releases than this and they were shitty at launch. At least both of those games [attempted to] fixed their issues with patches.

It was a not very good port of a not very good game. Some of the right ingredients were in place (such as the weapons), but too often it looked and played like Gears of War, complete with chest-high walls to hide behind. And the less said about the painfully juvenile dialog, the better.

If they had opened it up and let the player carry all the weapons with ample ammo, it would have done far better.

Exactly. These clueless assholes have no idea. So it doesn't sell well and their default excuse is piracy. Yeah, let's not consider that it not selling well is YOUR fault. We'll automatically blame the consumers and then punish them for it. Consider all of this, then they self-proclaim it's the best PC port ever. This is filled with so much clueless, out of touch, fail I don't even know what to think.

Here we go again. I think the marketing and ill received demo had a lot more to do with the game under performing. I notice he doesn't mention that the game performed well under expectations on the consoles too.

I would also mention that Cliffy bitch boy probably had a lot to do with the mentioning the piracy part. Just like he screwed the pc community over with Gears 2 and 3. I bought this game when it was on sale. I enjoyed it, it was fun but it was nowhere great. Plus the fact that they removed Coop that it was supposed to have might have something to do with pissing people off. And Steam on their site is still showing that this game has coop, Go figure!!

Yawn.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Capps, you're behind in Epic's Say Something Stupid contest. I know, CliffyB and Marky have such big advantage, but hey, a game cancelled because of PC piracy?. You have to do better. If Bulletstorm is cancelled it's because it didn't sell shit. Not even on consoles. That should tell you something.

And you guys are working on a PC exclusive while still spewing stupid shit like this?. Good luck with that. Idiots.

No, he does say that. They condense it down to "sales were good but not amazing. I think EA hoped we'd do better," but he said more about it at PAX.

Given that this is Epic and EA I think that's implied. Had sales been great elsewhere but not the PC then there'd be a sequel, just not on the PC.

So... this guy knows that the game did poorly on all platforms and still blames Piracy for the poor sales on the PC?

Well... I got news for him... piracy happens no matter what... and if the game sucks... those "pirated copies" were most likely NOT lost sales.

Game as a critical success but commercial failure. Marketing was a huge part of that. Game design as well, as it took a bit to get used to and many couldn't get past the lack of a jump (which was kind of a weird complaint I felt, but one they should have better anticipated) and that the weapons felt designed for a faster game (which I think was a very valid complaint.)
