And I doubt that these dream of decades projects will fail. The devs for things like wasteland, shadowrun, DF, have been going to publishers for years. Its like a well known book author submitting a manuscript to publishers and continually being shot down for years, and finally a publisher says "ok, but you have to write the trilogy."
When you speak of failure, I assume you mean in terms of the developer getting enough funding to actually make the game. I'm not really talking about that. I'm talking about the final product that gamers will actually play. Will DFA, Wasteland 2 and Shadowrun actually be good games? Everyone investing in them obviously expects this to be true but if these games all end up being mediocre or worse, people's faith in this business model will dissipate pretty quickly. The developers need to deliver because if they fail, they can't blame publishers. |
