Blacklight Retribution Launch

Perfect World Entertainment announces that Blacklight Retribution is now out of beta, and the launch version of Zombie Studios' free-to-play online shooter is now live. They follow the news with word on plans for the first post-beta content update: "Blacklight: Retribution fans can expect to strap on their combat helmets tighter than ever before with two upcoming game modes and supporting maps going live shortly after launch. Capture, control and hold areas of a highly hazardous oil rig and pilot a Scorpion Tank through a twisting path of carnage in an experimental weapons facility. Both the new game modes, Netwar and Siege, blend acute team strategy and crafty combat prowess in a heart-pounding race to annihilate or be annihilated."

OK so I was wrong. The price the cocksmoking devs list in the market is the price for ONE DAY RENTAL of an item. To buy the base weapons outright is 5000-5500 gold.

150 gold per match, let's say 15 minutes for a match (I wasn't counting but that sounds about right), that's roughly 8.75 hours of play to unlock one "base" weapon. Which does seem pretty fucking high.

I was thinking of mentioning a rental-price for guns, but it seems kind of stupid because I don't think you can well balance that.
Sounds horribly balanced now.

You buy "receivers" (SMG, combat rifle, bolt-action rifle, LMG, burst-fire rifle) and then can buy assorted mods for them which nerf some aspects of the gun and bolster others. There are also assorted body armors that function the same way.

After a couple more hours I have 2000 gold, which is plenty enough for weapon mods (the first weapon mods are something like 125 gold each). I've been using the SMG to great effect.

Also, everybody has access to anti-armor RPGs and flamethrowers that are purchased during rounds with the disposable cash earned throughout rounds (like in CS). Everybody also gets the uber mech suit, which functions the same way.

You definitely dont have to "grind away" to unlock new receivers. They give you an SMG for three days just for starting (I've been using it to repeatedly make top 3 round to round), and every level up you get assorted weapon mods and items that also function no-strings for three days.

All in all... it seems all right. I haven't run into many "pay to winners" using high-level gear, but then again I've been in the rank1-10 servers with other new players.

You start out with a grand total of one (two, if you count your pistol as seperate from the starting SMG). If you want to modify it at all, you're stuck grinding, or paying up. There are no options to change without cash/points.

Ug. That's just dumb. You need to hook people, and while the carrot at the end of the stick is a nice incentive, you need to learn from drug dealers and give people enough to start that they want to return.

I get that this is fully free, but give people at least a partial game. Or call the free version a demo, offer a $20 "full" version with all weapon bases covered and offer other weapons that are non-essential.

Despite their claims that it is not pay-to-win, the method for unlocking guns, etc... is entirely just that.

You can unlock them by earning points during multiplayer, but, the gain is so absurdly slow, that you're probably looking at no less than 30-40 full rounds played just to unlock a single gun customization. Then more to get a single attachment, etc...

I thought the first Blacklight was fun enough (got it during the $1 sale Microsoft had back when), but, this one is not remotely worth the time investment if you don't want to just shovel cash out. Very disappointing.

How many guns do you get starting out with?
In other words, are these extra guns gravy or are they the entire game?

It sux. Another shitty FPS with only 8v8 advertised as an mmo. Quake 1 was much much better 20 yrs ago.Ah and a LOT of hackers too and they dont care.

Even AVA from ijji is soo much better

The first game Tango Down was not an MMO and neither is the second game.

I thought I'd check this out, as it's billed as a very nice looking DX11 game, free to play, Unreal based. Cool.

After an hour or so of downloading and installing, then it starts up. And downloads and installs patches for another hour or so. I click "Play", it immediatley brings up a "Crash report" box. I report that apaprently I crashed before the game engine even got started. I click "Send", it says "Unable to connect to crash report server."

That press release makes no mention, or implied mention, of it being an mmo...
