Out of the Blue

You know I can remember a time when you couldn't find a good show on television. Things have changed so dramatically in this regard that at 9:00 pm Sundays we have a choice between Mad Men, Shameless, and Game of Thrones, each of which could easily have been the best show on TV some years ago. Quite an embarrassment of riches. Thank goodness for the DVR.

Good show on television when two of them are on overpriced pay channels. One of them on HBO which is so in the stone age with online streaming. Unable to stream HBO unless you get the cable channel too which also requires basic cable and refusal to put their shows on Netflix.

Least it seams they do something with the wads of cash people throw at them.

Why would they possibly change this? They're intentionally set in the stone age - they get the lion's share of their revenues from cable companies. Going direct to consumer would just damage this. HBOGo is an attempt to get cable companies more accustomed to it, but they need to be delicate as there's zero chance enough people would pay for it to warrant a decline in cash from cable companies.

Putting the shows on Netflix would be even worse, as it would kill most of the reason anyone pays for HBO.

Will HBO some day become more of a content creator than a cable channel? Doubtful. I don't think they could survive that way. At the very least they wouldn't be able to experiment and take risks like they do right now.

Want the show? Pay the monthly fee to your cable company or buy the DVDs. If you do the former they'll do anything in their power to make it as easy for you to watch those shows as humanly possible (need to catch up on earlier seasons? HBOGo has them, but only if you pay for the new seasons!)
