Orcs Must Die! 2 Announced; Adds Co-op

Robot Entertainment announces plans for Orcs Must Die! 2, saying the sequel to their AIAS award-winning action/strategy hybrid will come exclusively to personal computers this summer. This is a direct sequel, starting off all of 48 hours following the conclusion of the first game, and it will offer exclusive content for those who own the original, which they say has been responsible for the demise of 3.4 billion orcs since its release. The game will be playable by attendees of PAX East next week, so we'll be hearing more about this soon, and in the meantime, here's an announcement trailer and here's a list of new features, including the oft-requested multiplayer support in the form of co-op:

  • New Campaign – Orcs Must Die! 2 features a full campaign that you can play in single-player or with a friend in co-op. Choose to play the campaign as the War Mage, a headstrong hero who charges into danger, or play as the more nuanced Sorceress, a new hero who keeps enemies at bay with mind-control and magic.
  • More Enemies – An army of vile new creatures is set to pour through the rifts, and they’ve brought all of your favorite trap-fodder from the original Orcs Must Die! along with them!
  • More Defenses – Orcs Must Die! 2 has an enormous armory of new and classic defenses, including an all new assortment of magical trinkets. Use your new spellbook to buy defenses and upgrades the way you choose to, building up your arsenal based on how you play the game.
  • New Upgrade System – The skull system has been completely redesigned. You will always earn skulls for replaying levels, and the skulls can be spent on multiple persistent upgrades for each of your defenses.

This looks more like an expansion pack than a sequel. Don't get me wrong, the original game is great but I do wish developers wouldn't rush to increase version numbers.

Fine by me that it is an standalone expansion rather than a sequel because it is not a $60 title.

Did the orcs die at the end of the first one?

That depends on whether you got the blue, green or red ending.

Exactly. I love competing against other people on my friend's list, as it makes the accomplishment all the more significant. And it's often fun trying to get all the skulls. My biggest complaint would be that some levels are a bit too action orientated, which diminishes the tower defence aspect.

Guess I am the only one who did not like this one (OMD1)? It is a Interesting take on Tower Defense, but somehow it didn't grip me. Nearly fell asleep in fact, once you find a solution to a map the map is "solved" and.. has 0 replayability. Because apart from tweaking your solution there is really no variation at all. If the maps were randomly generated it would have a lot more draw for me ;/

The replay value comes in the form of mastering the levels, competing with friends on Steam and getting the highest scores/skulls. There isn't just one solution to levels, there are many approaches and trap setups that work. Randomly generated maps are often generic and don't have the challenge of hand balanced maps. What they really need to do sometime is a survival/endless mode.

Loved the game. Sorceress with mind-control sounds like an interesting addition.

I played the shit out of the first one. It was great. I enjoyed it lots but I got it when it had a one day sale and it was worth every penny.

I liked dungeon defenders better, but OMD was fun, so I'll probably buy this like I bought the first one.

Excellent news! I absolutely loved the first one and this is exactly what I wanted for the sequel! It may be a little early but so what, more of this game the better! I love the fact that it's a PC exclusive as well, maybe they can make the game look even better this time around because of that! Can't wait!!!
Its likely it sold more on the PC. I know dungeon defenders sold far more on the PC. Plus MS isn't exactly an indie friendly company.

My biggest (and only) complaint about OMD was that some of the traps are just totally useless (especially some of the DLC traps), so I hope they don't just add superfluous traps for 2.

Though, I bought OMD1 and all its DLC for about $5 during a Steam sale, and I felt that I should have paid full price. Such a fun game.

Dammit. Loved the first one, and coop in this could be utterly hilarious/amazing/infuriating. Now I am required to not only buy this sequel, but spread the OMD madness to all my friends.

Also, earning skull upgrades from 'old' already solve maps... well it'll make upgrading very easy, but this is already a casual game so no big deal I guess.

Based on our experience with Torchlight, I expect we'll see this sequel in early 2015.

Why? OMD was announced last spring and shipped in the fall.

Just read the announcement in more detail, really surprised to see them ditch the console digital platforms but hey any PC exclusive is a good one.
