"I’m going to turn on every damn light in protest of Earth Hour. Lighting the darkness is fundamental to humanity's climb." It's been a long time since Carmack said something I agreed with, but I definitely am with him on this. What Luddite/Paganistic tripe. |

Oh well, would have made life too easy anyway. yeah, i dont want to be set for life. i want to suffer. hehe. but seriously. i thought only one ticket won last night. that would make me really mad with envy. Seriously, after the first few million, what would you spend it on? Save it for my future generations, donate it, buy an extraordinary amount of land and have something built on it, fund whatever suits my interests and/or needs, invest (of course).
In other words, whatever the hell popped into my head. It could be worthwhile, it could be entirely self serving or fun; but it certainly wouldn't just sit there. they were talking about lottery winners on the radio this morning. dunno if what they were saying is true but its a sad statistic. most winners dont know how to handle so much money. on average lottery winners spend all the money in 5 years regardless of the amount. Tthe lottery is called a regressive tax for a reason. The people that need the money play it (poor in general) and the people that don't need it realise they aren't going to win and don't play.
Watching and reading about the stories, majority of people were already not very good with money, so what do you think is going to happen when you inject millions of dollars? Nothing good that is for sure. Go to the local casino - same thing.
I would have nothing but investments and trusts setup. AFter blowing a few million on just ridiculous fun, would be super easy to live off of a meager investement salary and have the money compound. After buying a few new cars and some houses for family - don't really need anything else. Can easily travel the world with 100k a year. Not even a fraction of your return each year on solid investments.
There are some success stories and I am happy for those people. It is sad to hear what hell some people bring upon themselves and their families when they get that money. My biggest thing would be making sure all future generations of my family tree could be as educated as they wanted to be. |

I'd hate flying around the world in my private jet, staying in presidential suites, having all my clothes tailor made, eating the finest foods and drinking the finest wines and spirits available to humanity. And banging the hottest women on the planet would just make life unbearable! |

Progress is not the problem, the problem is humanity's impatient, irrational, and greedy nature. Nuclear power, properly managed, could be our best bet for now, but the private sector and clueless politicians have proven over and over again that they can't be trusted to implement it safely and efficiently. Genetic modification could solve so many problems, but companies like Monsanto can't be trusted to regulate themselves and the irrational public can't wrap their tiny minds around the concept enough to stop fearing it.
If there is any evidence to be had of some higher consciousness watching over things, it's in the fact that humanity somehow always manages to trudge forward despite being as inept and clumsy as we are. We -are- improving as a species, the question is whether our growing wisdom will catch up with our growing power before we destroy ourselves. |
