Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Dropping MMO; THQ Cuts

THQ announces a change in direction for Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium, saying this will no longer be an massively multiplayer online game, as originally planned, but will rather be "an immersive single player and online multiplayer experience with robust digital content, and engaging community features." They say details on release timing and platforms will come at a later date. They also announce this has consequences for their staff, as it will cost over 100 jobs: "As a result of this change, team sizes at two THQ internal studios will be reduced by 79 full-time employees at Vigil Games in Austin, Texas, and 39 employees at Relic Entertainment in Vancouver, B.C." Here's the reasoning behind the shift away from the MMOG model:

“As previously announced, we have been actively looking for a business partner for the game as an MMO. However, based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features,” said Brian Farrell, President and CEO of THQ Inc. “Because we believe strongly in the high-quality and vast creative work that is in production, this is the right decision for both our portfolio and for gamers devoted to this powerful property.”

Fan of 40k here. The problem with the 40k setting, if you're unfamiliar with it, is that the scale is enormous. The Imperium of Man controls over ONE MILLION PLANETS.

No game where you're a single guy will ever do it justice. Even the RTS games, while fun, feel comically small-scale compared to the setting.

MMO or not, this game will not capture the setting. At best it will be a decent game with a vaguely 40k related skin.

Thats why a single player game telling a smaller story against a large background is a much better bet. Im still puzzled why no one has yet attempted a first person shooter with the setting.*

1) Superhuman baddass main character - check
2) Epic (TRULY EPIC) gothic/horror scifi backdrop, the universe of WH40K is truly vast, interesting and oozes 'history' and moral ambiguity - check
3) Shitloads of brilliant and well designed weapons that would fit perfectly into a FPS including powerfists, chainswords, autocannons, lasguns etc. etc. - check
4) Even more shitloads of well thought out enemies, from the mundane rebels/heretics, to the more exotic myrads of aliens, mutants, cyborgs, chaos marines, Tau, Necrons... -check
5) Vehicles galore, not really necessary in an FPS but from tanks, to hoverbikes to powersuits and huge mechs (Titans) etc. etc. -check

*well they did attempt one, it was a Playstation console exclusive and featuerd a neutered Tau robot as the main protagonist...talk about FAIL...

This.

There is serious potential in doing a party-based RPG based off of the Imperial Inquisition in 40k.

Chances to interact with several different alien species/servents of Chaos, different branches of the Imperium of Man, and be able to craft a team of minions of varying talents, all the while having to be careful in your choices so that you don't become a heretic.

I'd actually pre-order a game for once in my life if they put out a game like that.
