Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Dropping MMO; THQ Cuts

THQ announces a change in direction for Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium, saying this will no longer be an massively multiplayer online game, as originally planned, but will rather be "an immersive single player and online multiplayer experience with robust digital content, and engaging community features." They say details on release timing and platforms will come at a later date. They also announce this has consequences for their staff, as it will cost over 100 jobs: "As a result of this change, team sizes at two THQ internal studios will be reduced by 79 full-time employees at Vigil Games in Austin, Texas, and 39 employees at Relic Entertainment in Vancouver, B.C." Here's the reasoning behind the shift away from the MMOG model:

“As previously announced, we have been actively looking for a business partner for the game as an MMO. However, based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features,” said Brian Farrell, President and CEO of THQ Inc. “Because we believe strongly in the high-quality and vast creative work that is in production, this is the right decision for both our portfolio and for gamers devoted to this powerful property.”

Smart move.

Took about 10 or 12 mmos for companies to start thinking twice about it, but looks like we're at that point now. Yay.

The problem isn't 'mmo', it's that many are trying to climb on the bloody wow bandwagon...

Mortal Online is a niche MMO, not a huge cash cow, but it has a strong lent towards realism (ie. you literally cannot carry more than a few 10's of pounds of gear before it radically reduces your ability to, for example, swim 15 feet without drowning). It has a loyal player base, is making money and isn't trying to capture the mass market. It's not for everyone and has no intention of trying to be for everyone.

Sorta like Eve. A game that I found terminally boring and could never get in to, yet it's company is doing great business.

Good to see a bit of introspection re: Dark Millennium, the whole concept of 40k factions being boiled down to good/evil (even law/chaos) is ludicrous, even the "good" (lol) factions, human/eldar/tau, are all self interested and working their own agenda, and more likely to murder each other than cooperate.

Plus a lot of the player faves like nids (yay!), necrons, tau etc wouldn't be playable. The race split for two factions was already ludicrous without adding factions whose motivations are not shared by any other (tyrannid only live to increase the hive via reducing everything to biomass/necrons kill everything).

An 8 way planetside style game (human, eldar, ork, chaos, tau, tyrannid, necron, dark eldar) would certainly be interesting though... =) Anyhoo, didn't have expectations and I'm not bothering until an actual product comes out.
