Ubisoft: Play Assassin's Creed 3 PC With A Controller

There's a preview of Assassin's Creed 3 on GameSpy with quotes from Ubisoft Montreal Creative Director Alex Hutchinson about what to expect from the stealth/action sequel. The author deserves extra points for the concluding Q&A expressing skepticism that the PC edition of the game will be released alongside the console editions. On another PC-related topic, they learn that their professed "love" and plans for "supporting" the PC does not include putting time into mouse and keyboard support (thanks Destructoid). Here's word:

Sadly the PC version won't get much special treatment, he admitted: "We're definitely supporting PC, we love PC, but I think it'll be PC with a controller. I don't see us investing hugely in a mouse and keyboard setup. I think if you want to play on PC and you want to play Assassin's Creed, you have a controller."

This is just not true. I don't even understand why it's such a difficult concept to understand. It varies on a person by person basis! You may think that controllers are better for platformers, third person action games, racing games etc. but that does not mean this is true for everyone. Playing these games with a keyboard and mouse setup is much easier for me because I am much more used to that control scheme and using controllers is really awkward for me and actually tires my fingers from that awkward positioning. It is much easier for me to do precise movement with the keyboard than a controller.
A keyboard is a binary control system - button presses are either 'on' or 'off', with no in-between. A controller has variable sensitivity controls, which allows precision breaking/acceleration and turning. It is objectively better for racing games. I accept that for third person and platformers it is more subjective but games like GTA and Mafia that mix driving with action and shooting I find better overall on controller, as do many others.

My point is that you should use the best input devices available to you. For racing games that is a racing wheel, followed by a controller and lastly KB+M. For platformers like Tomb Raider I find controllers the best. For first persons I've found nothing even comes close to KB+M. PC gaming is about flexibility and confining yourself to just KB+M is neglecting the best aspect of PC gaming - flexibility.

This is not an attack, just a question for curiosity's sake.

Of the people complaining about this in this thread, how many of you were planning on purchasing AC3 before you read this?

I was. I still am. That still doesn't mean not putting any effort into it is something I agree it.

That said, I don't know whether I'll get the superior PC version, or the (by now probably uber-shitty) PS3 version. It depends on what type of DRM the PC version will be infected with.

Eh, AC:Revelations looked far better on the PC than it did on either the ancient 360 or the decrepit PS3. They provided proper high resolution support, I could turn AF and AA on to the highest levels known to man, and it just kept running along at 60 FPS.

The same thing was true for brotherhood and AC2.

So there's little doubt that it WILL look better on the PC.

I actually think it's so their whiny little console fanboys don't have their asses handed to them in multiplayer.

Ever seen a console fag try and take on a PC player in multiplayer? Smoked, every time.

Hey, I respect them for being honest about how little they care about the PC port and how little effort they are putting into it. Many ports you know thats the case and they just don't say.

Doesn't mean I'll buy their crazy always online DRM-ridden stuff, or forgive them for other crap they've done, or pull any punches on future crap. Just means that I give them a teeny tiny bit of respect thats immediately overrun by a tsunami of crap they do.

What a bunch of fucking dicks. Fuck you Ubisoft. First your shitty ass DRM and then this big "Fuck you" to all the PC users who've supported you.

At least buy us dinner before you try and fuck us.

No time for keyboard / mouse are they having a laugh? Someone needs to figure out that if you need a controller is NOT a PC game.

I know you're talking about Assassins Creed but just wanted to say that the PC probably has a lot more digital customers than the consoles do. Steam has 35 million active accounts, the conversion rate of console users who do stuff on XBL and PSN probably isnt even close to 1:1.

True, but without access to digital sales of the Assassin Creed's franchise I can't speak to how large or how small their digital PC sales are. DLC attach rates are an even more elusive metric to track as the sales data for DLC is usually proprietary to the publisher.

Regardless, one would hope that if the revenue for PC as a whole was anywhere near even 5% of their total worldwide sales they would be treating that platform with a little more respect. Even not knowing their actual digital metrics, their attitude to the platform speaks volumes.

Factor in the extra DLC sales that come from having a larger install base on the XBL and PSN networks and the PC gets dwarfed even further in terms of revenue as the publisher gets a lot larger share of the DLC sales than they do for the retail sale.

The PC accounts for what, 4% of sales? Xbox 55% and PS3 40%?

Psh. With digital maybe, but most likely not even that. As far as retail is concerned, for the Assassin Creed franchise as a whole the PC is more like barely 2% of unit sales. 1% for actual revenue as PC tends to sell for cheaper than console. Hell, the PSP and NDS games for the franchise individually almost made more money than all of the PC sales! Those were developed for maybe about $20 each if the quality of them is any judge.

That's a good chunk of change to bother with making a port, but if you are asking for more than the bare minimum than you are dreaming.

The PC version doesn't have good M/KB support, so I'm going to play it on consoles which also doesn't have M/KB support!

The PC accounts for what, 4% of sales? Xbox 55% and PS3 40%? The console versions are going to get by far the most development love (as per usual), so if AC3 on the PC ends up not playable with the kb/m, you're just shooting yourself in the foot buying it on this platform.

Your mistake to make, I suppose, but if even rudimentary kb/m support is too much, you've got to wonder in what other ways they will be pulling back. Sounds like it will be a strict copy and paste job to me, but Jerykk seems to think superior visuals and performance awaits him. Good luck with that one, mate - you're going to need it.

Make no mistake, I have no interest in AC3 as I didn't like the previous games. However, if the previous games are any indication, AC3 PC will have better visuals and performance than the console versions, much like 99% of all ports.

Will some idiots jump to the conclusion this means no mouse/keyboard controls at all? Clearly. Whatever false information will serve their ranting needs.

Its funny because youre mad about other people making assumptions but youre doing the same thing. Why don't you let other people speak for themselves instead of making assumptions about what they think?

I don't have any of these but the last Steam sale was tempting. If anyone was on the fence about getting this on PC I don't think Ubi is doing a good job of enticing them, thats for sure. Search says AC sales were down with the last game so they should be all about picking up new customers again.

I am a serious PC gamer and I don't own a 360 gamepad. I'm serious about not wanting to use overpriced shitty Microsoft peripherals. The last MS peripheral I purchased was a SideWinder Precision 2 ~10 years ago.

My brother gave me one that broke after two months and the analog sticks would always drift out of place. Not impressed with gamepads and don't really need one.

How is that better? Why do I want to play on a screen with a distorted image due to improper aspect ratio scaling?

Does it actually distort the image or just add letterboxing? Because if it just adds letterboxing, you'll still be seeing the same amount of game as you would on a 16:9 HDTV.

I still don't understand your logic. "The PC version doesn't have good M/KB support, so I'm going to play it on consoles which also doesn't have M/KB support! The PC version doesn't have proper 16:10 support, so I'm going to play it on consoles which also don't have 16:10 support!"

Do you see me arguing something about that here? Typical Verno trying to start an argument with me where there is none to be had.

Err yeah no, as usual you get all confrontational over fairly innocent things. It was a pretty simple point about a single thing in your post and I've already addressed the rest in portions you didn't quote. As for series history, I agree that it matters in terms of expectations from consumers (just like we all said in the Diablo thread) but I don't think people are really out of line with their concerns - the language here is vague and Ubisoft has a varied track history with PC support in general. If any publisher was going to pull a stunt like that, it would be Ubisoft.
