That's what I was thinking Beamer. Isn't Angry Birds the most played game of all time*? It's hardly amazing for them to buy a struggling, small-time studio.

I suspect ochentay4 seriously underestimates the size of the mobile gaming market.

* A statistic which I suspect depends heavily on how you look at the figures.

So, they made Angry Birds (a casual cellphone game) and now they gained so much money they bought FUTUREMARK? Unbelivable.

So they made one of the top selling video games of all time and they gained so much money that they bought a tiny little company that has produced two games that no one really paid attention to, that was part of a benchmarks company that few people have heard of (relative to the amount that purchased Angry Birds)?

Unbelievable!

No, they bought the GAME studio that future mark launched. Just like the blurb above says.

I think the only game they came out with was the unstoppable gorg one (oh and the shattered horizons one).

Futuremark is separate and distinct and will continue to produce benchmarks under their name.

I thought SH was a good 'first attempt' at a game. No, it was a great first attempt. Sorry to see FM sell them off, but I guess I can't blame them. They probably got a good offer.

I haven't seen the numbers on Gorg, but to my knowledge tower defense games aren't blockbusters by any stretch.

Combine that with the miserable failure that was Shattered Horizon, and I'm trying to figure out what they think they've accomplished?

If the goal was to snap up 3d talent, well, they got that in spades. If the goal was to buy a successful game studio that could take them into places they were unable to reach on their own, I see disappointment in their future.

Angry Devs?

More likely Rovio has zero 3D abilities and, with cellphones and tablets rocketing in power, needs to gain those abilities quickly. Angry Birds is awesome to its fans, but people are beginning to crave eye candy as well as style.

Futuremark already proved they can do the eye candy. Easier and more reliable to pick them up then to start looking for and hiring your own people. You know they can do the work. You know they have the talent. You know they have the managers and producers.

My guess: no matter what else went with it, they pretty much just sold the name because they're finished making games. Rovio will pump out hackneyed, lo-fi, casual trash with Futuremark's name on it, and we'll never see anything that tries to bring unique game concepts and solid graphical scalability together again.

What value is the name when Rovio already has the best name in "hackneyed, lo-fi, casual trash?"

Honestly, what value do you think the name "Futuremark Games" actually has, especially to a ridiculously strong and recognized name? And, since Futuremark remains distinct, odds are they didn't get the name...

This is one of those head-scratching posts that seems like you're angry and cynical without spending even a second asking yourself "does the thing I am proposing make any sense in any world?"

Seems like an odd fit given what Rovio makes and what Futuremark has made so far. Weirder still is that apparently Futuremark (who is going to continue to make benchmarks independently) is retaining all the rights to Shattered Horizon and Unstoppable Gorg, even though they are not going to be making any games in the future. So Rovio basically just hired the staff and took over whatever project they were working on. Maybe they were working on some big new casual franchise. Angry Gorg?
