World of Darkness Footage

World of Darkness News  reports on the World of Darkness EVE Fanfest presentation for CCP's upcoming WoD MMORPG. They offer new details on the game from the presentation, all sorts of images, and a brief trailer showing the first footage from within the game shot pretty cleanly off a monitor. The clip shows environments, but no gameplay.

So yes, the game has been "in production" for going on at least 4 years now, if not longer, since White Wolf merged with CCP back in 2006.

Actually, they are STILL in pre-production.
"We are still in pre-production," Reid [chief marketing officer David Reid]explained."

So, instead of hiring a bunch of people to work on the game...only to fire them when Dust is released (or fire the Dust folks)....they decided to simply make slow progress with a smaller group and focus on one new project at a time.

You know...you would think that was some kind of alien concept or something.

Game engine still looks fantastic. Of course, as other people have said, that doesn't mean they will make a good game. I sure hope so though.

It's just a static cityscape...and really just a single street. I mean, if you are going to show off footage of a game that has been in full production since 2008, I'd expect that you'd have more than this.

Their engine can obviously render some pretty stuff, but this is really early and won't look this good when there's an actual game in there. It's sad that they haven't gotten farther yet, but at least I like the art direction. Also it looks like they kept the "few streets" world zones style of bloodlines, which is good. I hope that they can somehow replicate the feeling of playing that game, but it's an mmo, so I doubt it. We need to have a kickstarter to make a graphically updated version of bloodlines :p

It may not be a shock-and-awe trailer, but actual in-game footage is a good sign for a game that many were thinking was pretty much dead in the water after CCP ran into financial difficulties.

But as to the content of the video, it is good to see they've nailed the mood of the setting so perfectly. But we'll see if they can really vary the environments enough. Since, by necessity, the game is going to take place almost entirely at night, they'll have to figure out how to make one dark city look different from another dark city.

Meh, city street at night, how exciting!

Looking forward to the game though!

At the risk of ultimately sounding like an idiot for not researching the facts first, if this has been in dev mode for that long, then how can anyone agree it's 'looking good'?

It was, apparently, a graphics test. To assume that they've literally been working on absolutely nothing else is pretty silly. As far as the graphics engine goes, it looks pretty decent, especially compared to most MMOs today. Hell, compared to SWTOR, the most recent "big" MMO, it looks stunning.

As to what else there is to the game, well, obviously they didn't show any of that. It wasn't, apparently, the focus of their demonstration. I'm quite sure they've done a lot of other work on the game that wasn't showcased here.

Regardless, drawing any conclusions from this other than "it looks good", or "it looks meh" (should you think so) seems entirely premature.

It's a short clip of a pre-alpha "graphics test" shown during a panel at a fanfest, and a recording of a recording in a dark room at that, cut them some slack (the game is unlikely to be released until 2014 at minimum). Even with all that, you can make out some pretty advanced lighting effects, and a far more detailed environment than any other MMOs (maybe comparable to the upcoming The Secret World).

I'm just depressed that I'll be 30 by the time this comes out...

This.. They have been working on this since 2008 and obviously haven't done shit because their money laundering scheme er I mean Eve is more important to them. Not at all impressed that a game that's been in development to at least some extent for roughly 4 years, has nothing to show for itself. I hope White Wolf hasn't ponied up too much cash for this project because I would say it's being wasted.

Except in the literal sense, and even then it looks like some pre-rendered crap a second-year ani student put up for his mid-terms. If it did indeed take FOUR years to get to this point, in a dev studio that does nothing but MMO's to begin with, and with the 'AAA' talent on hand, I can't understand why anyone would get all giddy about it...If it ever does see the light of day, it will probably be quickly forgotten except for the few fanboys...

Remember, CCP can only afford to have about four people working on this these days...
Maybe it can get the Dust 514 crew once that bombs.
That aside, this just seems a bit underwhelming. It is a continuation of what we have seen before and does nothing to reall detail the scop of the world, the gameplay, player interaction, etc.

Actually they said at the panel that they still have 55 people working on it (and "all AAA"), though they've had to be rotated in and out to work on both EVE and Dust. Once Dust launches they'll be able to scale up the WoD team again.

Because they have another game in dev in front of it. Resources will be moved once Dust goes live

I think the presentation looks great. Unfortunately, I don't like MMOs so I'm not holding out any hope for the final product. All this does is make me wish for another single-player Vampire RPG.
