Has anyone done any sort of metrics on whether or not Mac users use Bootcamp to play their Windows games?
Trust me, they know how, they use it, and this is a waste of time. |

Linux and OSX? Just tell them to Boot camp their systems, save the money and time for the PC. Linux hates games and Mac's don't care either. *plonks venomhed on the head*
There's a reason Steam supports gaming on the Mac and that I do as a developer -- it makes me money. I agree with you about Linux though; as a developer I generally feel like "no money is worth this" when it comes to supporting it. Linux distributions still haven't learned the value of things like stable ABIs, etc. |

I would be extremely impressed if they managed anything close to Icewind Dale..

To even make 1 decent map region you'd have to hand-craft an entire tile-set with thousands of objects and hundreds of custom texture shaders in a 3d-app, render it properly, split it into tiles properly, then draw collision and interaction boxes by hand and hope it looks at least half-way connected. Not to mention rendering everything with actual transparency (like trees you can walk under) SEPARATE then placing it by hand.
Of course, thats completely ignoring placing of glow/light sources if you use 3d-models for characters, and post-editing the entire resulting mess to look coherent and without artifacts, weird connections, non adapted light situations etc.
It would be easier to make a scene in real-time 3D than what Infinity Engine did. Remember, they did that because 3D was too slow for their scene sizes. It had the side effect that you can't zoom, because tiles are a set resolution and scaling of thousands with any kind of up or down scaling of tiles would create horrible artifacts at the seams.
So no, Infinity Engine graphics are out of reach for this project, by far.
sounds like you havent played BG in a long, long time (if ever) |

Sadly I never played Wasteland but I'm really psyched because they make a Linux version! Besides, if it really is the successor to one of my favourite games then it's gotta be good! |

The point is, the emphasis does not appear to be on visuals, at least not cutting edge ones.
I would expect Icewind Dale, slightly modernized. How could you expect more with the money they've got to work with?
The music should be good. The writing should be good. The gameplay will hopefully be good. Infinity Engine era graphics? I'm *very* cool with that.
Personally, I believe the Infinity Engine should have went open source and a toolkit should have been made available so people could use it for their own games without limitation.

We're really in uncharted waters right now, not only in regards to funding, but what we receive in return, and if it meets expectations.
All we can do is back projects that look realistic in what they can achieve, temper our expectations, and hope for the best...

| This is great news & as a backer of this project I'm happy for those that will utilize these ports. My question is this, it's my understanding that a good AAA title costs tens of millions of dollars to do right. How are these guys going to pull off an epic experience similar to the Fallout 1 & 2 with cut scenes, etc. with less than 2 million? I mean a decent engine alone is going to cost them a fortune...I for one loved Wasteland & the Fallout franchise but I'll be honest I'm expecting more then an "indy budget game".... |
