Dragon Age II "Exalted March" Expansion Cancelled

BioWare's Mark Darrah tweets word that a Dragon Age II expansion called Exalted March was cancelled as part of the just announced transition the developers of the RPG sequel are making to the "next phase" of the series (thanks GameSpot). Word is:

We did have plans for an expansion pack to DA2 but, other DA opportunities came up. There were even shirts! It was called Exalted March.

So in my little world I did enjoy DA2 better, to me it played better as an action game then DA:O played as a fake turn based game. But I get that most players don't roll with what is given and set expectations on how they must play. I do get that.

Inversely, I do fully get what you're saying. In fact, I played DA2 completely end-to-end yet another time using this method to see what kind of experience it is. It certainly does provide entertainment, but a critical issue is that it requires a much bigger power differential between PCs and hostile NPCs.
And this is where the core of the problem lies. To achieve the relevant power differential, you have to power game, minmax, whatever you call it. When you do, it's a blast of more than diabloesque proportion.
But because you're minmaxing, it feels like you're playing the game wrong. So in both gameplay types (action or tactical pausing) the game feels wrong (for different reasons, but the end result is the same).

Certainly!

Playing it as an action based game you will never be as optimized in your moves, moment to moment vs a game that is true turn based. So yes you have to be more the man stat wise to play full on action, but all action based RPG's work like that. The difficulty settings in the game do allow it and felt good. But you have to be open to even want to play a game that way and if you are set in the series and expect more DA:O then one could have a real problem with the switch.

To me every game stands on it's own. I don't say that is right or I'm better, it's just how I go about things.

I also love pure turn based games. That way the devs know exactly how you will be playing to make sure the challenge is correct. Always turn, not sometimes turn and others live action, that leaves huge balancing gaps to account for.

Which to me that is what pause based is. It's a bastard setting to me. If you want to play it really slow and pause a lot, it's dirty and harder to follow then pure turn. If you go between action and pause a lot, I find pause becomes some kind of pseudo cheat mode. Pause to win.

Sort of hard to explain, but pause based games are my 3rd favorite out of 3 ways. That said, it's not like I cannot or haven't enjoyed games with pause based options.

For me I like pretty much all RPG styles to some extent. Playing Dungeons of Dredmor now, wow is that game a blast! Simple turn, permadeath, just rocks.

I like the one term you used on your action play through of DA2...

"It certainly does provide entertainment"

To me that is all that is needed. The action model of DA2 combined with the ability to customize the AI's tactics (which is critical in full on action in this game) made a very entertaining game playing it that way. Personally I loved it, but I always respected those that wanted more DA:O. For me I found DA:O just ok.

I found this compared favorably to other actions RPG's. The only thing I want them to do is get rid of small adventuring areas, it kills me. Someone mentioned corridor fighting in DA2, it was the same as DA:O. Same as in ME, KOTR, NWN... The engine is stupid old. I was thankful they really reduced load times in DA2 over DA:O, by a lot.
