Inversely, I do fully get what you're saying. In fact, I played DA2 completely end-to-end yet another time using this method to see what kind of experience it is. It certainly does provide entertainment, but a critical issue is that it requires a much bigger power differential between PCs and hostile NPCs.
And this is where the core of the problem lies. To achieve the relevant power differential, you have to power game, minmax, whatever you call it. When you do, it's a blast of more than diabloesque proportion.
But because you're minmaxing, it feels like you're playing the game wrong. So in both gameplay types (action or tactical pausing) the game feels wrong (for different reasons, but the end result is the same). |
