Blizzard: Some WoW Subs Lost to The Old Republic

An interview on Eurogamer.net talks with World of Warcraft producer John Lagrave about the state of the game. He discusses the subscriber numbers for the MMORPG, saying that they have lost some players to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, though they think there are others hibernating until the release of the next WoW expansion:

"We certainly do look at [where WOW players go], and we have a very smart bunch of guys who do our analytics for us," said senior World of Warcraft producer John Lagrave.

"Of course people are trying Star Wars - our development team are trying Star Wars! I'm one of the few people who's still playing it actually, but yeah we've seen a dip in subs. It certainly has to at least be attributable to The Old Republic, but it's also attributable to people who want to wait and get Mists of Pandaria, so it's not surprising.

"Are they going elsewhere? Yes they are. We don't have a lock on all the best games in the world - Skyrim was an amazing game."

I saw the intro areas, yeah, but I tried not to judge those too much. I can't remember the site but there were a bunch of videos, including the intro area, character creation, world exploration, and then a few that took place in the instances/missions/whatever.

I watched one of the instances and the players were fighting this one monster. First of all, the mob had like a billion health. It took 60 seconds just to take one down. The whole time, there were all these spell effects going off on the mob and I literally couldn't even see the damn character model. The whole time, none of the players moved.

Believe me, I'd love to see a gameplay video that shows a different experience. I was really looking forward to this game.

Bizarre, thanks for the heads up. I will definitely be on the lookout for more gameplay videos. I'm hoping you were just seeing videos of someone who is bad at games (like watching the Giantbomb tools play stuff) but I guess we'll see.

Haha yea. Then they'll hop on Pandaria early on, play it for a few weeks until they get bored, quit the game again and go back to 'hibernating'.

Most of my friends are "done" with WoW. They don't hate it or anything but future expansions won't grab them, they can only refine the game so many times. Like spindoctor said it had a good run and it's not that people necessarily dislike it but you can only play one game for so long (ok except Counter-Strike which lives forever).

D3 better not suck.

Im not one of the masses that seems to hate the idea of Pandaria. I actually kinda like the look of the expansion. But it's also highly unlikely that I'll buy and play the expansion, unless there is a big dry spell with other games. Which I don't expect.

More interested in Diablo 3, Torchlight 2, Paths of Exile, Bioshock Infinite and replaying BG/BG2 if the "Enhanced editions" are any good, and a ton of other games (supposedly) come out this year.

Off subject a little, thanks to the D3 beta servers being down all weekend, a friend and I started a coop game of Titan Quest. I forgot how boring the first 20 levels of the game are. Good game, but I much prefer the focus on Skills and Skill modification in D3, compared to that of TQ, where you basically use the same skills at level 2 as you do the rest of the game. There isn't a lot of gameplay variety and the game is rather long. Still a good time coop though.

They may have lost subs, but they are still retaining a huge chunk of them also.

I don't think anyone is having trouble putting food on the table.

Errr, what videos specifically? Maybe they're of the intro area or something? The combat has a proper projectile implementation so its supposed to be very fast and frenetic, the opposite of just sitting around pushing 1.

Not so sure about that. I was very pumped for Guild Wars 2 until I saw those gameplay videos. Good lord, the game looks awful! It was impossible to see what was going on during combat, everyone just stood in place and jammed the 1 key, and the art style looked like some kind of bad Korean MMO.

D3 better not suck.

They explained it, the reason was that they didn't want to have each expansion be darker than the previous. You can't have dark, dark, dark, really dark, etc... They're throwing in a lighter expansion to cleanse the pallet since the next two expansions will be very grim indeed.

This gives them a chance to introduce a new continent full of color and interesting dungeons and raids. I myself am looking forward to it, I could only stand a month of Cata before I quit. With the lessons they learned from Cata, Mists of Pandera should be a good expansion.

Because you didn't see the walrus people in Lichking? Or the crab people in Cata? Or the myriad other crazy races?

Yep, it's not like there's a history of that happening over the last 6 years with all their expansions. A drop in subscribers, then a resurgence with the release of BC, then again with Wrath, then again with Cataclysm. But you must be right, he's just making it all up.

Exactly. This cycle happens all the time. People do come back for expansions, and they will likely see a bump in subscriber numbers when Pandaria comes out.

Even if not, the game had a good run. It had to wind down at some point. It doesn't necessarily mean that people are leaving because Blizzard is messing up.

It may be losing some subs, but look at EQ. It just went free to play after, what, 13 years? (Holy shit! 13 years! I remember beta testing that game. Ugh, now I feel old.)

Heheh, great jab at TOR. Also KUDOS for mentioning Skyrim, a single player game.

Fairly certain he meant one of the few people (from their development team) that's still playing it. I doubt Blizzard's PR would allow anyone to make an openly derogatory comment about competition.

That's true for me. I'm not paying monthly to grind raids, heroics, and dailies, but I like going through the expansions. I don't think I have ever kept up my sub between expansions. (Besides, GW2, yeah!)

Yeah, I bet they'd like to think that. Love to see the look on their faces when they wrong and no one comes back for your Kung Fu Panda expansion.
Dont worry. They will hold enough players to make a fortune, they will get new players who arent much into heavy duty raiding, more into collecting pets and achievements with some effortless gameplay mechanics.

Normally i would have resubbed beginning of the year as i have done every time after a longer absence from the game. But now it's march and i have no desire to return at all. I guess, i'm finally done with WoW

QFT

Everyone knows that only WoW can kill itself. I quit when the new of pandaland expansion was coming out and virtually all of the depth of the game was being removed.

I think WoW has had its great success, but nothing lasts forever, and with the 40 Billion Blizzard made, I won't feel bad for them if they lose %70 subscription overnight.
