Notch's Space Adventure Plans

This video shows a BBC interview with Marcus 'Notch' Persson, shot off a TV in regrettably horrible state-of-the-art 1950s fashion (thanks VG247). They talk with the Minecraft creator about his BAFTA win, and learn his next project is an adventure game to get in touch with your inner Garriott/Branson. Here's Notch's short answer to the question of what he's working on at the moment: "I think I'm going to make a space game. Where you're a guy in a spaceship and have adventures in space."

The newer space sims are..clinical and static feeling?

It's odd, but the best recent space game I've played was Space Rangers 2..only because I found the world interesting, there was a lot of odd things going on. Though I realise it's a completely different sort of game. I'm just talking purely from a space setting perspective.

Freelancer was awesome. There's just no other game like it. Open world, actual exploration, solid shooting, rpg elements, a story and online coop.

The Xs, evochrons, Black prophecy, Darkstar one, just don't match up for various, critical reasons.

Black Prophecy was the only game I could enjoy from the bunch. It had pretty tight action and some loot, but failed miserably in every other aspect.

I like how he felt he had to describe what he meant by "space game". I suppose he suspects otherwise we would take "space game" to mean one where you organize a closet one block at a time to make more space for more blocks!

I would copyright that, sounds like a game EA would make.

There is something like 25 people at Mojang. Minecraft usually only had one person working directly on it, sometimes two. Many of the best indie games I can think of had a team of two working on the game.

What the community has been doing with Freespace 2 is probably our best bet at this point. Even the overhauls of the engine to bring it more up to date makes the game look pretty damn good.

If it's a space sim, I'm interested. Probably.

I got a lot of hope riding on the next X-universe game, and I was getting pretty fed up with X3 and its kin (bland sector cubes with painted backdrops being the real kicker).

The Evochron games are decent. Good community and support. Nails most of the aspects I'd be looking for. It's just, personally, I want fancy graphics and stuff (not that Evochron is bad, just nothing special). That *is* actually pretty important for space games IMO. They need to convince you that you're really there. In the early-mid nineties, space games are what set the benchmark for PC graphics.

Yea Egosoft, basically X was just 1 sector of space cloned a few hundred times, crappy space fighting and no cockpits. The new one looks promising though so we will see!

How bout at least getting Scrolls out before jumping ship again Notch. Not that I wouldn't enjoy the hell out of that game.

Nevermind that Nothc is not the only person at the company and others are working on the game. Just as someone else is maintaining and improving Minecraft these days.

Notch is hardly the first game developer to work on multiple projects at once.

I rarely work only on a single project where I work as a programmer as well.

Remember, in that interview he said he had like 3 or 4 other unannounced projects besides scrolls and besides the minecraft ports. This could be one of them.

Like I said in previous threads, IMO he's spreading his company too thin.
