Wing Commander Saga Correction

The Wing Commander Saga Website corrects part of the recent report on this fan-created Wing Commander game has official approval from EA. Here's how they explain the situation:

We would like to post an official correction about something that has been misreported about "Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn." We are not officially or unofficially sanctioned or endorsed by Chris Roberts, Origin, or EA. We are thankful to them for permitting us to make Saga- as manifested by them taking no action to shut us down but allowing us to develop it, just as they have done with other projects like Standoff and Privateer: Gemini Gold- but they have in no way, shape, or form sanctioned our project, nor have they done anything to make it official. They have not contacted us and we have not discussed it with them. Once again, we are thankful that they are permitting us to do this, but no endorsement of Saga by these entities should be implied from that fact.

And yet, there's a ton of precedents, in the other direction. A look at WCNews' fan projects pages shows 6 completed and 14 in progress. The argument that EA does classless things and therefore it might do this classless thing thing seems mildly ridiculous. It's nice (for me) that Valve holds steep sales twice a year and carries a lot of indie games. It would be nice if someone would buy me a new car. Valve does nice things, therefore it's easy to see Valve buying me a new car? You kind of expect a company to behave badly or well in a consistent manner rather than sporadically picking the dick option with no rhyme or reason.

Terrible analogies aside (where the FUCK did Valve buying us a car come from???? Jesus that was dumb...), you are ignoring the fact that the mods you mentioned went practically unnoticed by most everyone. I'm a huge WC fan, and I only came to find out about them late. The Saga production has already garnered far more attention than all of the previous mods combined - how many gaming sites even covered the release of Gemini, the Privateer remake... as compared to this one? Hell, the mod makers themselves made an announcement, clarifying that this is not signed-off on or in any way sanctioned by EA, that had a wiff of panic in it that this might be the one that catches EA's notice given the coverage it's receiving.

To clarify - I don't expect EA to FOX this; however it would be a surprise to virtually no one if they did. Honestly, if you would have tried to comprehend the point from the beginning this whole conversation would have been unnecessary.

It is consistent, if one holds the opinion from past history and personal experience that they are just plain dicks.

Well, it's conjecture, sure. But baseless?
It's baseless until someone can show an example of where EA has done this to another mod or fan game project especially recently. I'm all for EA bashing but do it for the right reasons.

I disagree. I take "baseless" to mean that there is no evidence to suggest its possible, not that there's no precedence, which is what you are talking about. Apples and oranges. There is certainly enough evidence to point to that illustrates that EA can and often does behave in a manner that is counter to their customers desires and distinctly lacking in class. Given EA's general lack of class and goodwill towards its customers, it's easy to see them FOXing a mod if it gets enough attention.

Just wait until it's released and shows any signs of popularity. Then it'll get stepped on and EA will announce an official Wing Commander reboot or something like that.

Maybe.

That's the danger with unofficial remakes though. You put a ton of effort into something you don't own and it might get taken away from you at the last second.

Well, it's conjecture, sure. But baseless? I don't know about that - EA has proven more than once that it isn't above classless, anti-customer behavior. Though we are happy they haven't thus far and hope they continue to refrain, it certainly would surprise no one if they did pull a FOX.

Quoted for baseless conjecture. EA has done a number of things in recent years which deservedly have drawn the ire of PC gamers and video game buyers in general. However, shutting down fan projects is not one of them. I can think of plenty of fan-made mods and game projects which have EA's approval. EA has also released older games for free like the C&C Anniversary release and has approved the release of stand-alone C&C Renegade mods.

Can you actually name any fan-made games or mod projects which have been "foxed" by EA? I can name several by Activision/Vivendi and Atari, which is one of the worst, but not EA.

True nuff. And as the man mentioned in his response, they have a history of permitting fan remakes and expansions specifically in the Wing Commander franchise. So all evidence is that EA is showing intelligent restraint. I wouldn't expect them to officially endorse a project they have no involvement in.

However the story falsely got started about approval, thats the kinda thing that draws attention of slumbering giants like EA.

And him calling out other projects is just bad. If EA decides to go after him, they may well decide to shut everyone down because 1 guy got a little too noisy. After all, if I pull out a hammer to hammer down one nail thats sticking out too far, I might give the others around it a whack or two just to make sure they are staying down.
