The Elder Scrolls MMOG Announcement in May?

Citing an "industry source that wishes to remain anonymous," Tom's Guide reports a rumor that in May Bethesda Softworks will announce an MMOG based on The Elder Scrolls series of RPGs. The speculative story has few details, but word is the game will take place during the "Second Era" of the series, and will feature three playable factions. Thanks PC Gamer.

skill = based on the amount of time you have played the game

This is an exact description of how every single MMORPG operates.

Here's the setup to the plot of TESO:

http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/2920

I just hope it's not a WoW clone. I want a wide-open world where my actions actually matter to other players that I don't meet. Yes, I know I'm wishing beyond hope, but I will continue to hope.

My EVE corp is always recruiting.

Trust me, if EVE were something other than "skill = based on the amount of time you have played the game" then I'd jump all over that. That's pretty much one of the few things that keep me from it. I still (figuratively) cry when I talk about SWG... /sigh

The whole point of ES games is to make YOU feel special, unique in the game world.

That, for me, can be applied as a reason to avoid all MMO's. If I wanted to be a single, nondescript soul among many, I'd go to the mall. When I play an RPG, I want the illusion of uniqueness, specialness, aloofness, etc. And no, ridiculously expensive rainbow dyes with which to play dress-up with your avatar don't count in my book.

I'm really hoping this isn't true. An Elder Scrolls MMO is an absolutely terrible idea. The whole point of ES games is to make YOU feel special, unique in the game world. Another MMO with countless nerds turning in the same quest every 10 seconds will kill off any feeling of accomplishment you might have had.

Can you imagine sharing the end of Skyrim's main quest line with 30 other jerks on top of the Throat of the World?

And I really can't see Bethesda just blowing off the mod community after the years of support they've gotten. You can still play Morrowind, which is 10 years old, but have it look like an entirely new game, today with all the user-made content that's out there. You certainly couldn't have user-made mods cluttering up an MMO for obvious reasons. Is Bethesda really ready to cut off a legion of fans with this approach?

I hope not.

A TES MMO would ruin the TES world for me. TES games are a welcomed respite from the sophomoric depravity that embodies MMOs these days. Just looking at any of the nexus pages associated with TES or FO3/FNV reveals what's popular, but I can always choose not to see skimpy clothes, hentai female bodies or ridiculous anime characters in my game. Having these thrust on me in an MMO experience is not something I'll endure.

Because most MMOs are moddable right?

AS the previous few comments state. All me and my buddies ever wanted was a 2-4 player Coop option in Skyrim. I'd have put so many more hours into the game if it had this.

Problem being, and this MMO rumor confirms it, they KNOW how many hours people are willing to put into Skyrim, so if they don't make TES an MMO they'd be missing out on all that cash they could make off of the people who would play the game coop. Sad.

Why? Is there really any desire for yet another fantasy MMORPG? Seems like a huge waste of resources.

If somebody could just come up with one that isn't Extreme Hotbar Championships...

I think they're a little too late to the table. The current state of the mmo genre is so burnt out that people are just not very attracted to it anymore.

If they can bring something completely new to the table that redefines the genre, it might be worth it. Otherwise, if I were them, I wouldn't even bother wasting the resources on the genre and just focus on what they do best and always are guaranteed to make a profit.

Also this MMO could benefit greatly from the game Mount & Blade. Ditch the idea of "levels" where people become too powerful.

Imagine and MMO without levels, but maybe with skills? This would force people to stick and work together because someone that plays the game 1 year would be really good, but he could get ganked by 3-4 players that have just started the game the past week.

Don't think this is possible? Ultima Online was this way for about 6-9 months. At first it was chaos. You left a town, people would hide in the tree's and kick your ass in. Eventually mobs of real people would go out and murder the real bandits and hunt them down. It was incredibly tense and fun, people would help you, heal you etc. etc. The other aspect is that you ACTUALLY LOST THE ITEMS YOU HAD ON YOU! None of this zero death penalty. So when you got snuffed you could lose that sweet armor, weapon, gold, your horse. Made you think twice.

MMO's today are a friggin treadmill of grinding with no penalty for jack all. BORING

I would like to introduce you to a game I play called Eve Online. You may have heard of it. It usually has about 25-50 thousand people online at any given moment. It has all the features you mentioned in your post.

They could indeed choose a specific area of Tamriel instead of the whole continent. But they would need an interesting place to drag players and varied enough to make leveling up interesting. Iliac Bay could do it. Snow Temperate and Desert and Daggerfall Online would sound catchy.

Well if they make a MMO I hope they keep the game mechanics of the series as much as possible. Playing TOR at the moment and I am feeling like I am playing WOW again. The game is lacking a lot of ambition in that regard. Same warrior attacks same rogue techniques same sh"t all over again. I know Conan didn't do as could be expected but at least they were trying to innovate.
Bethesda has been doing this series for some time now and in spite of the fact they are more successful each time, nobody else is doing that kind of game any more. No more Ultima Underworld No more Might and Magic etc. I would see no point in playing Elderscrolls online if they don't keep what made the games successful.

I love the Elder Scrolls series, but for an MMO it seems to be about as generic a fantasy world as you can get...

Creston

Actually, Arena (The first TES Game) featured all the provinces of Tamriel, and it's fairly diverse. I would imagine that an MMO would feature all the provinces as well.

In Arena, the provinces were an empty flat stretch of land with an occasional village on it. That's not going to cut it anymore in an MMO. People now want eye candy.

Somehow I doubt Bethesda would build every province of Tamriel for an MMO if they have to give it the same level of detail as Oblivion/Skyrim. It'd take them 20 years.

Creston

It'd also ruin any surprise in future single player games, as you'd already explored the region. Part of the fun is learning a new area.

[...]

Yeah, this is one of the things that is most bothersome.

Furthermore I'd hate to miss out on any interesting lore that might come up since I cannot justify playing MMOs. :/
