Baldur's Gate Enhanced Editions Announced

The counter has reached zero on the Baldur's Gate Website, which has resulted in load their server is not up to, so a little patience is required to visit right now. The announcement they were counting down to is that work is underway on Enhanced Editions of Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II, which are being overhauled by Overhaul Games, a division of Beamdog (apologies for arigially writing that as "Moondog"). Details are still scant, though Gamer's Hell points the way to tweets by Beamdog's Trent Oster adding that clarifying that there will be separate Enhanced Editions for BG1 and BG2, that Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition will include the Tales of the Sword Coast Expansion, and they are very interested in supporting the mod community. He also states they are looking at releasing the Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition this summer.

Great timing. I just started a new playthrough on BG1, using the BGTUTU mod (which ports BG1 to BG2's better infinity engine). I've modded it quite a bit, and it's sort of like a new game. I'm not sure whether to be excited by BG Enhanced Edition, or just worried that I'll be paying for the same game twice, with less features than my modded version.

It's not that I don't want to get excited about this. It's that nothing of this announcement replaces, or adds (yet) to the product I already have installed.

Exactly. Due to how the community has already modded the game to create a highly 'extended edition' they should have released much more specific information, even if only intended but not yet implemented. I think what we want to hear is a truly modernized but completely faithful update of the game. Not just widescreen support and a handful of bug fixes.

Quite an underwhelming announcement, failed to get me interested in the least in this.

Or an explanation of what is "enhanced"? One would assume it's resolutions and textures, but some specifics would be nice.

I'm assuming so. That's the one thing I'm not wild about (like I really need another download service) but in this case I suspect I'll make an exception.

I think I spent more than 100 hours in BG2, and while that included the expansion, I didn't even touch Watcher's Keep (I think it was called).

So yeah...there goes the summer!
