Gratuitous Tank Battles Preorders Get Beta Access

Positech announces that Gratuitous Tank Battles has entered beta testing, and that they are now accepting preorders for this tower defense variant described as "alternate history World-War-1-with mechs." These two bits of news come together, as those who preorder will gain immediate access to the beta. The game can be purchased through this page, here's a new gameplay trailer, and here's word:

GTB differs from conventional Tower Defense in many ways. Firstly, you can play either side (attack/defense), secondly all the units are customised both simulation-wise and visually. Thirdly, the game has a built in map-editor and map-sharing feature to encourage widespread custom-map-making. Fourthly, GTB lets you save out your own attacking decisions, then play against them as defender. And lastly, the game also features optional 'adaptive' AI rather than just pre-scripted waves of enemies (although these are available as well).

Set during an alternate future where world war one never ended, and continues to be fought with mechs and laser-tanks, GTB blends hardcore strategy gaming with a light-hearted sarcastic sense of humour. The war has raged for 200 years, but our superior officers are convinced it will all be over this Christmas, however many poor beggars have to be crushed into the dirt to make that happen.

I like tower defense, I'll probably pick this up.

So while I assume the game has a campaign (and story), and that it is early, and beta, I still wanted to suggest a trailer with more than just features.

Maybe I'm just getting on in years, and I do still like features : )

you can't spam in the game, because there are supply limits for each unit with cooldown timers, so if you place down (for example) 4 heavy tanks, you then need to wait a while for more to become available, during which time you will end up placing a mix of other units.

In addition, if you play against adaptive AI, it will adjust to the choice of units you place down, so they only way to win is to play flexibly.

Missile Command meets PacMan, looks great, although, I am not sure on the 'insert' your own attack units scheme, I mean, you can make it too easy, or impossible (just spam bosses?), it's a glorified sandbox which .. hmm, I think they strayed away from a good formula.

Ya know... The first third or so, I was pretty unimpressed (needs more explosions maybe? Plus, I couldn't hear anything, so maybe the volume is too low), but the amount of customization shown later in the vid... (easy mode map making, unit modifications) Good stuff ; )

So I'm glad I watched the whole thing, and nice work : )
