I don't disagree that they've made improvements. But the improvements aren't connected to the version number. Whether they call it "Firefox 11", or "Firefox 5.11" doesn't change the content of Firefox, or what's been patched. The improvements are completely independent.

Addressed below. The version number doesn't illustrate improvements to the user either, it didn't before and it still doesn't now. This is primarily used internally.

Yes, and I dislike them doing so just as much (well, ok, slightly less as much, as I don't use them, but do use Firefox).

Your personal dislike is irrational in this scenario. You could not tell features based on version numbers before and you still cannot afterward. That requires reading the release notes. If you want to just say you don't like seeing FF in the tech bits news with odd numbers all the time then who cares, that's your right. But to claim that they are somehow violating user guidelines for versioning is absurd.
