Mass Effect 3 Face Import Workaround

The BioWare Social Network has a post from BioWare's Chris Priestly on a problem some users are having importing character faces from Mass Effect 1 or 2 into Mass Effect 3 (thanks Eurogamer). They are still working on this, but in the meantime, endorse a user-created workaround:

We are aware that some players are having issues importing the faces of characters from Mass Effect 1 or Mass Effect 2 into Mass Effect 3. The issue is likely in how faces were detected when imported from Mass Effect 1 into Mass Effect 2, and we’re working on the best way to correct it for affected players.

As our teams work hard to address the importing of face codes we would like to call out a fan made tool that may be able to help PC users in the short term:

Mass Effect Tools

And detailed instruction from a fan on how to use them here.

My From Ashes doesn't load. At first it crashed during the loading screen with that landing ship fpying through space. Then I repaired the DLC and now it just never stops loading instead of crashing. Frustrating!

Anyone else having or had this issue?

Yep, my Sheppard imported from ME2 (and that one from ME1) didn't make it through.

It shows how bad EA has fucked Bioware when they can't even get straight ten goddamned values across three games anymore.

The thing I don't get is this...isn't a toon going through all 3 games exactly what the whole point of the series is in the first place?

Isn't that exactly what you would end up testing more than anything else? Or do they really think that people would want to completely change the look of their toon from one game to the next?

Ok...just so I understand what the problem is:

If I had a character that I played through 1 and then 2 with, then the import would work ok...but if I created a ME1 character and attempted to port it straight to ME3, then I'd get the bad imports?
Pretty sure the main problem is mostly if you did ME1 and imported to ME2, and then tried to import that to ME3 (you did all three games and imported twice).

Ok...now I get what the problem is.

When you import from 1 to 2, and if you leave your ME1 look unchanged(which I did), the game doesn't create a code based on your face options for 2(because it simply reuses the look you had from 1).

If you had modified the look you had during the import process, then a code would have been created that would be readable in 3.

So basically, even though they knew they were doing a 3 and that we'd be importing characters from 2 to 3 that we used in 1, they didn't bother to check if everything worked for a straight, unchanged toon from 1 right up to 3.

WTG Bioware!!! Cheerleading

No, I'm playing right now with a character that I've done 1 & 2 with and I've lost my face.

I'm playing with the default now and not too bothered about it, because the Shepard I came up with was pretty ugly TBH.

On the whole, most of the options from the frist two games were carried through, but there are definitely a few items that were just dropped outright!

Additionally, some of the female options are off - eyes are not aligned, hair is placed too high for some of the faces, etc. If you have a famale shepard with the layered bob hairstyle (as mine did,) it is quite different than how it looked in ME2.
Kind of sh*tty given this is a game when you carry over characters.
Thinking this was particularly lazy on BioWare's part,

Actually, I think it's more like

"We knew face importing wasn't going to work for custom faces from ME1, but since all we give a shit about is new customers, we couldn't be assed to try to fix it."

Anyway, I posted those instructions in the big ME3 thread, and for my three custom Shepards they basically didn't work at all. YMMV.

in other words
"we didn't bother to test any face importing from ME1 to ME2 to ME3, because we thought such a thing would be incredibly rare. Also, we have no idea how to fix, but fortunately the mod community stepped up"
