That was one of the most significant outages, but it happened almost every day of the christmas sale, mostly around the 10am PST time when new deals came out. And any of the rewards that did stuff with steam inventory (like doing a trade for a reward) the steam inventory was up and down (mostly down) for a large part of that day. There were also significant issues with some achievements during that sale, just like the previous big sale, but as those were in large part due to certain devs not testing much (or any?) in advance, thats not really too much valve's fault.

| They may in fact do so, but it may not be enough. Steam's store front was virtually inaccessible for most of the first day of the Xmas 2011 Steam sale Nothing to make me get all bent out of shape over, but a bad first impression for someone intrigued as to why everyone around him or her was talking about "Steam" and whatever "sale" was going on. It only happened day one, so maybe they added bandwidth following that . |

Also, I think it would be fair to say that over the lifetime of a game on Steam that the majority of the purchasers are not going to be on launch hour.
That being said I don't disagree. more capacity better |

Steam has far far less than 1% downtime which is way beyond acceptable in any industry. Your home is probably without power more often per year than Steam is inaccessible. I never said I was a world expert on servers. That would be the kinda people valve hires.
The downtime of steam tends to not be the entire service, and it tends to happen only during bigger sales and releases, which makes it a bigger deal than the overall percent might suggest. For instance, there were a LOT of new people during the Christmas sale (even discounting all the spam accounts who were exploiting the 1 cent humble bundles to exploit valve's gift event). Nearly every single day of that sale around 10am PST, there were problems with steam. If I was totally new to steam and I was checking it out while there were problems, I wouldn't feel very confident about buying games there. In fact, I might want to look at that crappy origin instead.
Its also quite easy to see where the problem lies, since when things happen one can check the publicly provided steam stats on content server loading. I don't "know-it-all" and its not necessary to do so to see where the problem is. One can also see which parts of steam go down and when to get more hints as to where the problem is. Even if I'm totally 100% wrong as to the problem, that doesn't change the fact there ARE problems, and they happen repeatedly, and they should be fixed.

sure let origin get good so you can pile up the games, and have them shaft you in the ass 2 years down the road when one of their execs gets bored of shafting the little guy in other venues, or their profit margin drops by .005% from consoles so they turn on the screws again for pc gamers. falk them, falk their philosophy, columbo would agree. They seriously need to spend some of their mega millions on hiring more server specialists and getting some more hardware/software into that load balancing.
If a company's store page goes down they literally are losing money. Valve doesn't seem interested in upgrading enough to stop that because its been going on for years. |

Sooner or later, Origin might actually stop sucking ass and actually implement elegant features like Steam. I suppose I'll give it another shot then; as much as I'd like to limit the number of game service platforms on my machines to one (Steam), it seems Origin isn't going anywhere and eventually EA might publish a game I'm interested in.
It just pisses me off to no end how petty and spiteful EA has been behaving because Steam is kicking their shitty service's ass, then they have the nerve to lie about it and claim they oppose Steam's policies when the evidence suggests they are (typical for EA) full of shit. |

Screw EA and the wannabe's that do it in shit framework using VisualBasic or some shit and bad design decisions or not willing to invest what needs investing for worthwhile product and user experience. |

I know some developers have been rejected but Valve's standards aren't exactly high - there's plenty of dross available on Steam. It would be a mistake to just open the floodgates to every wannabe developer trying desperately to find a large audience. Valve prefers to work with developers / publishers and support them through the process; it doesn't want to become known for shovelware. |

The want it to be THE place to get online gaming... but they don't want every cruddy game out there.
For example, if it turned into the Apple "App Store" then it would stink. Heck even with them turning down loads of apps, you still have dozens of "flashlight" apps and other lame/worthless junk.
If you have to dig through a mountain of trash before you find something that *might* be a gem... then the heap isn't worth it.
They want quantity, but they also want to be known as having quality or highly-demanded stuff.
